A little of this and a little of that
describes my day today and what a nice day it was for a change. Launched out of Scituate Harbor around 5 am and mangaged a dozen nice size stripers on my plastic jerk baits. Unlike the rats we normally catch early in the season, these fish were a pleasant surprise with most averaging around 5-10 lbs.

Switched over to mackeral fishing around 11 am to get a load for the freezer for the season and had no problem loading up around Minot Light and a couple miles east of the North River. The only problme with the mackeral fishing, was trying to keep the pollack off the mackeral rigs long enough to get into the mackeral. Between the two of us, we must have couple several hundred pollack and ended up with 3-4 dozen nice macks for the freezer.

Rounded out the day with 6 nice cod averaging about 5-8 lbs. Was a great day to be out on the water, especially since I wasn't wearing my rain gear for a change. Nice start to the striper season and expect those 30-40 fish days anytime now, especially with all the bait in the area. Larger schools of bigger fish will probably be in anytime now.

Hope others had a good day, tight lines.

Re: A little of this and a little of that
hi nice to know that you had great times fishing out there. For me I am still wondering wether the jig and the soft plastic really works. I'm more interested to learn how to use soft plastic, rapalla and other artificially baits and lure.Hope with your experience, you can teach me how to use this by the beach and maybe to teach me to catch big ones.Regards

Re: A little of this and a little of that
I've been fishing out of a boat for 20 years now and it's been a long time since I plyed the surf in pursuit of stripers. While I have no doubts that my plastic techniques would catch both numbers and size, success is always (ain't that the rub) dependent on knowing where to go, what tides to fish, what particular structure or sections of the beach are most likely to be productive. If someone took my boat away tomorrow and I was forced back to surf casting, I'd be spending a lot of time scouting at low tides, especially any moon tides. I've got an article on plastic jerk bait fishing, which might help on that. I've also got two links up to stripersonline and striped-bass, both of which are loaded with surfcasters.

As with any type of fishing, time on the water and putting in your dues, is a necessity to furthering your success. Tight lines and good luck.
