Cooking Light question
I noticed that on absolutewrite there's some information about how to query Cooking Light. However, it says in Writer's Market that they take no freelance work. Anybody know which is correct? Here's the link on absolute write that discusses Cooking Light.

Thanks, Linda

SOMETIMES

- A pub will return to freelancers at a later date.

- A pub just wants to slow down its submittal rate.

- A pub, for a short while, will rely on a small stable of freelancers that they know.

Recommendation: if you've done some research and maybe even composed a query, send it--'cause sometimes the pub will run shorter on material than they had planned for; thereby leaving you with one of the few games in town.

Yes...
They do indeed take freelance; I wrote a few FOBs for them, and I know others who have written for them recently. Watch out if they ask you to do an FOB, though...their MO is to assign 350 words then ask for up to 800 during the revision process -- with no extra pay. That's why I don't write for them anymore.

Re: Yes...
Does anyone know how long it takes for them to reply to queries? I sent them a query a few months ago and haven't heard anything.
Sitting on my hands,

I would definitely follow up. Try e-mail to send your queries and to follow up (that's how I broke in). The e-mail format is firstname_lastname@timeinc.com.

Re: Follow up
Cooking Light interviewed me a few years ago for a feature piece that wasn't related to cooking.

My experience was all positve in dealing with the interviewer initially in e-mail, the actual interview, and his followup.

The interviewer was a freelancer who also teaches freelancing at a university. After the interview we yakked 3 hours about writing and biz. He never said anything negative about his work with Cooking Light.

A slight hitch was I had to send a second or third e-mail to remind someone else to send me the clip.

I know this isn't the specific info you're asking for, but at least it is a positive feedback on the mag.

Do follow up with them.
