~About Your Character~
What is your character's full name?: David Marsden
Age: 14
Give a physical description of your character: David Marsden is around 5'8", weighing in at 175 lbs and has thick hair that he keeps long enough so that he can see it at the topmost range of his vision, but short enough so that it stays out of his eyes. Brown is his natural hair colour, but he prefers orange, and so he keeps it dyed orange. he is a stocky boy, who would likely be playing rugby or American football or some other contact sport if he attended a Muggle school. He often stands with his feet about shoulder-width apart, in a stable, well-balanced stance, with his arms folded across his chest. He has naturally well-defined muscles, and is stronger than you might think by looking at him.
He has vivid blue eyes, and a slightly round face. He has no freckles, and is not prone to acne, but his nose has a slightly larger bridge than usual. During the summer he tans easily, but is not likely to burn, but because of this he often has a tan line on his arms where his shirt stops. He also has a tendency to somehow keep this tan even during the winter months, although it does fade a little.
Describe his/her personality: David has the gift of heavy sarcasm, backed up by quick wit. A friend once observed David and found that in five minutes, David had hardly said anything that wasn't sarcastic. He is a very bright boy, but is lazy unless motivated, and tends to not expend effort unless he wants to. He's often light-hearted and joking - humour being one of his strong points - but he definitely has a serious side to him as well.
David has a fiery temper, ready to flare up at a moments notice. He tries to keep it under control, but he is prone to wanting to solve his problems through giving the object of his anger "a good thumping." He is a fairly proud boy, and can't stand anyone putting him down, unless they are joking of course. He also reacts violently when anyone says anything bad about his deceased father, and has been known to hex a person into oblivion when someone is unfortunate enough to insult his father.
David is loyal to his friends, right to the end. Friends are what he values most above all else, and he has been known to say that provided he has his best friends with him, nothing else matters. He values loyalty in friends, and cannot stand someone who's fickle, or befriends people for reasons other than personality - such as looks, popularity, or money. The only drawback to his wanting friends is that he is rather shy until he gets to know a person. Once you get to know him, you find him to be a loud, funny, boisterous sort of person, but until then, he is quiet, and fairly withdrawn.
He also wants power. Don't get him wrong - he doesn't want to rule the world or anything of the sorts, but what he really does want is to be special. He wants to have special powers, to be able to do things that normal people can't, to have extraordinary abilities. His entrance to Hogwarts was a dream come true to David, as it gave him the opportunity to have that power that he so desperately wants, to be that special, extraordinary person. This desire for power, also leads in turn to a thirst for knowledge in him, as well as a curiosity towards most magical things, with the exception of dark magic. This is not to say that he ignores the dark arts, but his intense curiosity towards other things magical doesn't extend to the dark arts. This is because he wants to find out about magical things so that he can understand how they work, and so that he can have the power to do such things. The dark arts, however, he has no urge whatsoever to participate in. Instead, he merely wishes to know enough about the dark arts so that he may stop them.
He views Slytherins as slimy gits, who will stab anyone in the back to get what they want. He thinks that they only look out for their own interests, and to them, everyone else exists only to be used. He sees Hufflepuffs as rather simple-minded mostly, but loyal to the end, and hard workers. Gryffindor he sees as the ones who always get the spotlight, due to their bravery. In terms of magical ability, he sees Hufflepuffs as a bit lower than Ravenclaws, due to his views of Hufflepuffs being simple, but sees Gryffindors as almost equal. He thinks that Slytherins have almost as much ability as Ravenclaws, yet he thinks lowly of them for their disloyalty.
Explain his/her history: David Marsden was born to a witch and a wizard, Elaine and Jaden Marsden. Elaine was a beautiful witch who worked as a healer at St. Mungos, and Jaden worked for the Ministry of Magic. Jaden's job was to find dangerous magical items, such as the cursed necklace in Borgin and Burkes, and then remove the curses upon them so that they no longer present such a threat to the wizarding community, or the Muggles. Unfortunately, his line of work did not please dark wizards, and someone sent a package to his house with a cursed ring of great power in it. Jaden did not realize that the ring was cursed, and upon opening the package, he picked it up, whereupon the ring promptly killed him.
Elaine was stricken with grief, and retreated from the wizarding world and lived life as a Muggle, in an effort to get away from the constant reminders of her deceased husband. So David was brought up by his single mother in a Muggle home, not knowing that his mother was a witch, or that he was soon to become a wizard. He never spoke to his mother about his father, knowing that it hurt her deeply, but he had a few memories of his father that he clung to, such as the image of a bearded, smiling face, and the memory of his mother and father lovingly watching over him.
As David grew up, he became more and more interested in tales of superheroes with special powers, or fantasy novels with spell casters at the centre. In short, he became more and more interested in tales of people with special powers. Little did he realize that he wanted power. He wanted to be different from other people, to be special, to have powers. His mother never spoke of David's wizarding blood, and made light of the strange abilities that David sometimes showed. David sometimes wondered about his ability to make strange things happen, but did not seriously consider actually having magical powers. Until the day the Hogwarts letter arrived, of course.
When Elaine found that her son was definitely a wizard, and had been invited to Hogwarts, she realized that she couldn't hide from her past forever, and she needed to deal with her sorrow and move on with her life. So she taught David what she could of the magical world before sending him off to Hogwarts, and resumed contact with wizards. David retained strong ties with his mother due to his only having a single parent.
During David's first year of Hogwarts he found a knack for potions; which his mother had enjoyed, and been an excellent at. He also discovered a natural ability at Defense Against the Dark Arts; his father's top subject, and he also worked well in charms. He did not make many friends, due to his shyness, and his fascination by magic, which drew him to his room to study many a time, rather than mingle with his fellow Ravenclaws. Now, in his fourth year, he finds himself longing for friends, after three years without.
What year?: 4th
Which house would your character prefer?: Ravenclaw
Why?: His thirst for knowledge makes him a Ravenclaw, although the sorting hat had difficulty deciding whether or not he should be in Hufflepuff; with his want for friends, or Ravenclaw; with his thirst for knowledge. The deciding factor in the end was that he is not a particularly hard worker, tending to be lazy unless he is very interested in something, and that his yearning for power is strong indeed. Also, he's naturally curious. His mother always complained that his favourite word was "why?”
Wand Type: 14 inches, yew, dragon heartstring
Give an example of your role-playing: David yawned and sat up in his four-poster bed, bleary-eyed. Rubbing his eyes, he swung his legs over the edge of his bed and stood up to get dressed. Once dressed, he strode out into the common room, and looked around. The only people in the common room were a few first years and a few second years. He didn't fancy talking to any of them, so he headed towards the exit to the common room, and walked off down the corridor. "Avis." He muttered, and a few birds flew out of the tip of his wand and began to circle his head. He smiled, and held out his arm for them to land on, before continuing on to the Great Hall.
He sat down in the great hall, and piled his plate high with food. He props his DADA book up in front of him and begins to read it, taking care not to get food on it. Out of the corner of his eye, he spots one of his summoned birds flying in for a peck of food, and he whips out his wand, saying, "Impedimenta." As the bird slows down to a crawl, he waves his wand and the birds disappear, allowing him to carry on with his meal in peace.
