Differences in the book
I don't know how many people have read the book, but I'm curious as to what people think about the differences in the Captain Culley scene in the book and in the movie. Which one do you guys like better?

Not only that, but I just LOVE the character descriptions in the book. I also really like the way it wraps up Prince Lir. hehe.

Just wondering what other people think. BTW, if you haven't read the book, it's rockin. The movie stayed pretty true to the book because Peter S. Beagle did the screenplay adaptation. :wizard

I was just about to start a topic like this, lol!

The Captain Cully scene is probably the biggest area of difference between the book and the animation. I can't think of any other place where the animation strays so much from the book. To be honest, I can't really tell which I like better. I thought what happened in the book was funny when Captain Cully and his men came roaring into the town breaking stuff, and when Schmendrick filled his hat with water and dumped it on his head. I kinda hope the new movie will take after the book here, because I'd like to see that!

There's also the whole thing about Hagsgate, and the curse and Prince Lir that wasn't in the movie.

Small differences as well, like how in the book Prince Lir says that if King Haggard knew Molly was friends with a cat, he'd kill it. But in the movie, the cat plays in King Haggard's throne room.

The character descriptions ARE really good in the book. Many of the lines in the movie are straight from the book.

I like the book and the movie seperate for what they are. They're two different forms of media, and one can't convey what the other can. I love them both equally... the movie for the imagery, the book for the details.

Yeah Panis, I agree about wanting to see the Captain Cully scene out of the book. I thought it was really funny. :lol

Despite things being a little different in certain areas and the whole Hagsgate thing, I think that the animated movie is very true to the book though. It's not that far off.

I'm still crying laughing over the whole 'loving tree' thing. I LOVE that tree.

I have to agree that I love the character descriptions in the book as well. They are so well done. Molly Grue was different in my mind when I read her description in the book. Hehe, kinda hard to get the images out of your head from the movie, but I think I managed alright.

Cully scene - Schmendrick's "act"
My favorite difference in the Cully scene is the transition from Schmendrick's parlor tricks to real magic - when he sees the "disappointment" in Molly's eyes. In the movie it seems to just happen.
