ok i know a night mare they have: my aunt decided to get a fish. she was told she would need to buy water. i guess she thought in order to have bubbles in the tank one used carbonated water. anyway her fish died & she found out she needed distilled water. poor fish

They did it by observing their behavior, because they did not benefit from experience for longer than five seconds: that was the extent of their long term memories.
For example: A friend of mine watched his goldfish eat and spit out the same piece of fish poo over and over for ten minutes.
Hm well what do you know.. you learn something new everyday.. well, goldfish clearly doesn't

Goldfish!
Actually, they weren't goldfish. I think those were the tetras, that ate each other's poo and spat it out in utter disgust about ten times every minute.
I've read that goldfish have a really really good memory. However, they're based more in instinct than memory. Thus, if a little piece of fish poo moves, they'll eat it, because they see something vaguely food-like and thus eat it just in case. Upon discovery that it is not, in fact, food, they have the right instincts to spit it out again, and to swim away from it. That doesn't stop them from wandering back to it again, in such small tanks we keep them in, but I think it's more of an "Oh, food! No, wait, that isn't -eew!ptooie!- Damn, I wish I thought before I acte-hey, another fish! *mate* Gah! >_^_^

I sit corrected.
I hope you went to bed soon after you posted that... at.. 4:15am
In that case (generic fish with poor short term/long term memory) does learn something every day... it just happens to be the same thing every day.
Re: Goldfish!
do fish even really sleep...wouldn't it be hard to sleep when you have to constanly move to stay alive?perhaps they sleep swim and in that case i guess they have their own little fishie dreams...they must remember some stuff though cause i saw an experiment they did on myth busters with goldfish.it was pretty cool

Day Dreaming Fish.
They don't so much 'sleep' as 'rest'. They do go into a state similar to sleep, I would assume, and they automatically, due to deep-rooted instinct, swim in place.
Since they don't have eyelids, they can't shut their eyes, and thus, their sleeping must not be entirely restful.
Human beings require sleep to live because of the complicated psyche we have to keep alive throughout the day, and many people only have enough energy to last for most of a day (and most bodies only store enough to last for most of a day) at a time, and so, we need sleep.
Fish, instead, are designed to be awake and at the very least partially aware at all times, but to rest for certain periods to conserve energy.
Not sure if they dream, though. Would they count as day dreams, even at night, because the fish is awake, though?

Re: Day Dreaming Fish.
Well if we're going to get scientific about it, I have some points of my own to add:
Some fish, particularily those whose lives depend upon constant movement to avoid rocks go through cycles of microsleep, where they quickly fall into a deep sleep for a few seconds and wake up again.
Not just humans, but all mammals need sleep to survive. Dogs kept awake constantly will ofen die within 4-6 days. The estimate for humans is 10 days, but research isn't allowed to kill someone for the sake of a figure (not saying that I would, that's just stupid).
Sleep deprived humans also start having microsleeps of one minute, and after two days will become delerious and in some cases have paranoid delusions. They can also sleep like a log that's been shot for up to forty hours afterwards depending on the level of deprivation...
