Fender?
Does anyone know what the difference between the Fender Big Apple Strat and the Fender Double Fat Strat is?
As far as I can tell they no longer make the Big Apple Strat and may have just re-named it the Double Fat Strat but I am not sure.
Any help on this would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Fender ?
Well, what I think the difference is, is the "Big Apple" had a Hum-single-single pickup config. I haven't checked out the double-fat Strat yet, but I would guess it just has two humbuckers. Studio guys preferred the hum-single-single config for it's versatility. Pensa-Suhr, PRS, and one or two other companies put out "Studio style" instruments some years back to acquiesce requests from New York and LA studio guys....the Ernie Ball/Music Man "Luke" Steve Lukather Signature model is a good example of a current, better quality version.
If you are looking for a high quality-better built alternative, check out Ernie Ball/Music man or Tom Anderson guitars- www.andersonguitars.com Tom Anderson and crew have done work for the Fender Custom shop, and he also worked for and designed for Schecter years ago. Several of the luthiers for Ernie Ball/Music man have also worked for Fender and Valley Arts guitars.
Fender Big Apple
I actually bought a Big Apple from Greg back in '98 when he was at LaSalle. It was a hum/hum. Unless Greg just got the name wrong and I actually bought a Fat Strat but I don't think so. I think I have a hum/hum Big Apple and it was nicer than the Fat Strat, nicer pickguard, nicer edges etc but essentially from what I can tell it is the same, I need to call Fender perhaps.
Lastly, Tom Anderson and Ernie Ball make quality stuff, no doubt about it, but for some reason they are just not for me. I dig Fender, just my own quirk. I like to beat up my Fenders and feel bad if I blew money on an Anderson and it got a scratch on it.
Re: Fender Big Apple
Well, I'm back in the music retail game as of this week. I'll be managing a new branch of Riccardo's music opening in West Hartford. They're Fender dealers, so I'll dig up the dirt on the big apple/fat strat contraversy and let ya know...
There is no spoon.

Yeah, I'm not surprised at that. I don't think Greg got them confused at all. I know they have had several iterations/variations of the Fat Strat et al. I totally understand how you feel regarding the "pricier" guitars. Everyone has their quirks and preferences .
Just play on and get what works for you, Bro. That's what really matters in the end!
