Harmony textbook
Hello,
Can anyone suggest a good textbook on Harmony (or Counterpoint)?
I'm not interested in studying pre-baroque or post-modern harmonic systems at this point. All I need is some formal reading on basic harmony, at the level of "Harmony 101" which music-major student would learn in college. (I play piano and violin so I already know the fundamentals.)
I have read Joseph Fux's "The Study of Counterpoint". I liked its conciseness (some 150 pages) and its format (dialogue between the Master and the pupil) but it was a bit too old-fashioned. After all this book was written almost 300 years ago...
YES! Check out "The Elements of Music; Concepts and Applications" 2'nd edition, by Ralph Turek. It comes in two progressive volumes. Really clear, consise information.

Check out Walter Piston's book "Harmony". It's a very good and thorough textbook that goes over everything from I-V-I to 7 and 9 chords.
As for counterpoint, you might try to find R.O. Morris' book. I don't remember the name of it (something like "A Practical Guide to Counterpoint"), but it is very good. I'm not sure if it's still in print but look for it anyway.
