I almost had a 'pet' snake... While cleaning up a neglected, leafy, overgrown area of a corner of my back yard yesterday, i found a very tiny baby Northern Red-Bellied snake (here's a photo of what a full-grown one looks like). It was really small, no more than 5 inches long, but that little thing was already so strong! I brought it inside briefly to show the kiddoes and considered keeping it since we have unused aquariums and gravel and heat rocks and all that junk in the basement, but when i did some reading and found that their favorite meal is snails, i realized there was *no way* this would work since my daughter considers every snail in our yard her own personal "Gary" So, it's back in the snail-filled woodsy corner of the yard, to grow into a lovely being that will do its dastardly dining deeds far from the eyes of my snail-loving daughter. |

Re: I almost had a 'pet' snake... Since i can't think of an elegant way to tell you about the awful itchy poison ivy rash i've ended up with, i'll just leave that story out of my day by day recollections... -- edit ... M unknowingly gave me a challenge, so here goes my attempt at elegance in the retelling of my poison ivy tale: urushiol Bluebird watched as the plant brushed across my skin. Now i itch day and night. |

Re: I almost had a 'pet' snake... now that IS elegant! ... wut's 'urushiol'?? edit: never mind, i looked it up Urushiol What makes poison ivy so fearsome is urushiol, the oily sap it exudes. The stuff is so potent that a tiny quantity of it -- no more than can fit on a pinhead -- can be enough to trigger a severe reaction in as many as 50 people who happen to come in contact with it. Re: Re: I almost had a 'pet' snake... The funny thing is (in a really, not very funny at all way) that the first time i came into contact with it i had no reaction, so i figured hey, i must be one of those lucky people who isn't allergic to it ... little did i know that it takes a "first contact" for your body to develop a reaction and prepare a defense, so the next time i cleared an area where it was located i wasn't even careful because i didn't think i needed to be, and let me tell you -- it was bad ... i literally thought i'd go insane from the itching ... at one point if i could have submersed myself in a tub filled with acid and burned the top few layers of my skin off just to make the itching stop i'd have probably been out of my mind enough to do it. I can deal pretty well with pain, but that itching ... ah! I was going mad... |

Re: Re: I almost had a 'pet' snake... I'm finally better, although just this afternoon i found some more growing up a tree, and i was more frightened of it than if it had been a Copperhead - and that is no joke ... at least a snake won't bite unless provoked, but this darned poison plant will torment me if the wind blows the wrong way. |
