Movie Review Markets?
Does anyone know how to go about selling a movie review? (Especially if it is an independent movie?) Any help would be great - thanks!
Cate
Well
For this I don't care if I get paid--it is for a cause that I believe in---which I should have mentioned--it is an independent film.
I am not adverse to online markets . . .
Anyone?

Hey Cate:
The only place I can think of at this moment might be on a website called
www.writerswrite.net
They have markets listed for reviews of different kinds, paid and unpaid I think.
Doesn't Absolutewrite.com have some?
Good luck. You need to hunt some.

The only markets I can think of are newspapers and weekly magazines, but you most likely will have to be staff writer. I don't think there's much freelancing going on. Basically, the deal is you need to get into advanced screenings so that your reviews would come out in time (depending on the publication schedule... usually meaning 1 or 2 weeks ahead of publication). And to get onto advanced screening lists, you need to be a staff writer of something. So it's kind of a catch-22.
Markets probably won't buy reviews of movies that are out 2 weeks already, even independent or foreign films. But I could be wrong.
I write a weekly column, but I lucked out because I knew the people who are running it and I happened to be at the right place at the right time when they launched the mag.

Hannah, don't sweat it. Cate did say she didn't care if it was a paying or non-paying market. I think, Mastro was just making sure she was aware it was non. After all, we'd all prefer to be paid for our writing, and nothing worse than submitting something thinking it was a paying market only to find out it wasn't.
