Musical Inspiration
Best music for getting inspired....?
Any type that works best with different writing styles....?
Just curious... I've got my own list, if anyone's curious....

Ok, MJ, I make playlists on iTunes and the iPod. I have one for one-shots (*ahem*), one for my current depressing fic that helps with the angst, one for Zen in general, etc.
Evidently I am predictable, because when I had MSN Messenger running while writing a one-shot, Gidget popped up with "You're writing a sex fic!!!". Lovely. Just lovely.
What did I learn? I need more songs.

Liz... I'd love to see that one-shot playlist of yours!
My problem is that usually music inspires me to do other things that distract me from writing (i.e. my twisted little Josh mvid. I couldn't write until that was out of my head). But part of that is probably because I'm stuck right now and although I know exactly where I am going and what needs to occur, the words aren't there.
Of course, maybe I just haven't found the right song. Yeah... that's my problem.

I can't do music while I'm writing. I like to fool myself that I can multitask, but as I get older I find myself less and less able to do that. Probably because I like to sing along (pity the neighbors) and I find I can't sing and think and type all at the same time. 2 out of 3, yes. 3 out of 3, no.
But music definitely sets the mood. I'm not together enough to have a playlist for each mood, although, I guess, in a way, I do. I have a Zen playlist, one with bouncy, fun dance tunes that pump me up, and several musicals that each have a mood of their own, among a lot of other "stuff". I'd love to see your playlists, too.

It's short. Let's see...checking the iPod now... Breathe on me (Britney Spears), Too Lost in You (Sugababes - IHTBY vanity sex song that AMC stole for BirdDog. Yes, I am still bitter.), Addicted (Kelly Clarkson), Closer (Nine Inch Nails. This is Gidget's fault and this is not for the "nicer" Zex fics. LOL), Turn Me On (Nora Jones), Justify My Love and Erotica (Madonna). I have Spoiled (Joss Stone) and Loneliest Star (Seal) on it as well for obvious reasons. I need more, don't you think!?!?! The first four are the ones I keep repeating, IJS, hence Gidget's "Aha!". LOL!!

OK, I need to add that music doesn't always work for me. I can only handle so much before the songs are a distraction (especially the WYRL playlist) and I have to shut it off. If I am stuck, forget it. Music becomes like nails on a chalkboard and I can't focus. I find music helps when I am in the groove of writing. Lately even the hum of the A/C in the living room distracts so much that I keep turing it off and on just to think.

That could be it, too. My long fics have songs as their titles because the lyrics either inspired or fit where I was planning on going. Songs are great for motivators/enhancements of actual scenes (like the one I sent you the other night - I can't wait to use that! LOL!).

Nothing inspires me like music, nothing. If there's anything can get me writing, it's music, any good song. If the music can't get me inspired, than I just close up whatever I'm working on and giving up for a few hours.
When it comes to angst, I like Madonna's 'Take a Bow,' and Nelly Furtado's 'Try,' to say nothing of the greatness that is Sia's 'Breathe Me.' Love anything from Anna Nalick or James Blunt.
Love listening to Linkin Park when I'm writing angry or really intense stuff; love listening to Coldplay when I really can't get inspired... and love Rolling Stones and Aerosmith... try to guess what I'm writing when I listen to them...
*laughs evully*
