My Bird
Hi,
I have one bird, a starling. We rescued her from a storm and weaned her ourselves. She is perfectly tame, does not get sick from cold weather as other birds do and is perfectly legal to keep because she is a non-native species.

Re: My Bird
Hi Lisa,
I can't believe that there would be another person on this board with a starling!
I know that the recommended food for starling is dogfood mixed with baby cereal but my birdie just doesn't like it.
I feed her Skippio's Softbill Maintenance. It is pricey at sixty dollars for a five pound bag, but insect does cost.
I also feed her freeze dried crickets gut-loaded with calcium, fruits, veggies, whole wheat or grain bread, rice, eggs, and anything I eat that is good for her. I also feed live insects now and then.
When I first got her, I didn't know what she was, but I researched a lot on her and found out that common starlings (sturnus vulgaris) were legal to keep. I know that they are non-native and very aggressive and are very good survivors.
My bird talks and whistles and is extremely tame. She goes for a well-birdie vet visit once a year.
There are some websites on starlings.
What do you feed your starling? For his age, you must be doing something very right. What type of starling is he?
Let me know. I have some websites that you may or may not have.

Re: My Bird
Hi Anne,
Ok this Starling of mine has been a real challange !LOL
He changes his taste buds and we go through the battle of wills !I keep telling him if he does not eat his food he will not get his bugs !Then he sits and glares at me while I am on the computer,,,,,,,Ok then I break down and give him his fat juicey bugs!LOL
Seriously though I have him on an ever changing diet with one or two consistant food types.I was told dog food too.He likes it some times .He is eating a fruite ,grain and veggie granual type food now.He gets his meal worms, fresh crickets and any spiders ,bees, beetles and ear wigs that I can find in the yard.I also make a mush with dog food, fruite and bran then freeze it in a ice cube tray.He also just loves bits of my home baked bran muffins too.
Ruffus does not like to be held so we respect that .I do have to hold him ever so often to trim his beek and nails.I just love it when he sings to me :) Are they not the greatest birds?!
Take care Lisa.

Hi Bunny,
You have to be doing something so right. Is he a common starling? My Dusty will be three in May. She acts pretty much the same way. She has spoiled me for any other type of bird. They are the most marvelous of creatures!
Where did you get your baby?

Re: My Bird
Ruffus is a comman Starling and he came to me as a rescue from our local Parrot club. The origanal owner commited suicide and he was brought to them. The vet wanted to put him down but the Parrot club figured that he had alot of life left in him .He is a sad looking critter :( both of his wings have been partially amputated.I do not know what happened to him but I figure it was a cat attack. He was an adult when it happened .I have had him for 4 years now.He is having alot of problems getting onto his perches now :( But I figure as long as he is eating good and is still enjoying his warm baths, then he must not be suffering too much.I would love to post his pic here ,but I do not know how?
