Neville Longbottom (edited)
--------------------------------------------------------------------

~About You~

Your preferred name: Ryo
How long have you been affiliated with ezBoard? 2 years
How long have you role-played? 6 years
How long have you Harry Potter role-played? 2 years
Code: H-ANA RR

~About Your Character~

What is your character's full name? Neville Frank Longbottom

Character's age? 16 (July 30, 1980)

Give a detailed physical description of your character: Neville will never outgrow his reputation of being the chubby kid, which he rightfully earned during the first few years he attended Hogwarts. Recently, however, Neville has gone under a less than graceful transition into puberty, and a series of small growth spurts have left him even more awkward than before, if that's possible. He now stands a full 5'9", and continued growth is not expected. His body has thinned out with the added height, though he is still in no danger of being mistaken for a starving child. His cheeks, however, remain nearly as round as ever.

Neville's brown hair sits in a messy sort of bowl cut/ shag, courtesy of Gran's home haircuts. His eyes are a light honey-brown, sloped downward, and his nose short and round. Neville's small round ears are a family trait from his mother's side, but his wide mouth is entirely his father's. Neville has a small gap between his teeth on the left side of his mouth, sometimes causing a small whistling when he speaks.

Describe his/her personality - including fears, hobbies, interests, habits, strengths & weaknesses: Neville has spent the first five years at Hogwarts as the quiet one in the often raucous Gryffindor boy's dorm, mostly due to growing up with his Gran's overbearing personality. Her no-nonsense, tough-love philosophy of child rearing has caused Neville to be submissive but also to have strong values and loyalty, as she would accept no less. He is oftentimes timid, being most frightened of simple intimidation tactics, such as those employed by Snape. He is not, however, afraid of physical harm or danger, as illustrated in OotP. He is more loyal to people and to causes than he is concerned for himself; he bravely defends his house (SS), his family (OotP), and his friends (OotP), and his actions become more outward and noticeable as he grows into his own.

He is not exactly what one would call a natural leader, preferring to listen and take direction than give it. Though he tries his best and is a diligent worker, Neville often falls short of his own expectations and those of others, who usually compare him to his exceptionally talented parents. In short, Neville takes his time and responds greatly to support and comfort (OotP), and he is finally becoming the talented, special wizard that he is capable of being.

Neville is clumsy and uncoordinated, making broom riding a real pain in the arse (no pun intended). When nervous he tends to stutter and avoid eye contact, as well as becoming rather quiet. He spends a good amount of time looking for Trevor, as his memory hasn't exactly improved much. He's also still getting used to a new wand, but seeing as how this is his own personal wand rather than his father's, his magic has improved. One of his hobbies is, of course, herbology, and he spends a good amount of time in the greenhouses with or without Professor Sprout.

Neville is loyal to a fault, emotional, a good listener, brave, and caring. He is also underestimated often, which can be to his advantage.

Unfortunately, Neville also doubts himself, and thus oftentimes lives up to his own expectations. He sometimes feels a bit too sorry for himself, and he lets other people get to him easily or push him around. He also rarely stands up for himself, and can psych himself out.

Give the names of all members of your character's immediate family:
Frank Longbottom-father
Alice Longbottom-mother
Mabel Longbottom-grandmother

Explain his/her history: The beginning of Neville's life was shaped entirely by one Bellatrix Black and consequently the loss of his parents. Though they never died, their current state is the evidence of the Dark Lord's cruelty and ruthlessness. Sometimes Neville wishes that Black would have just murdered his parents to save them the suffering and him the pain of their constant reminder. His parents are a sore spot for him, and though he's not ashamed of them, he keeps them to himself lest people try and pity their family.

Frank's mother and father, Mabel and Thomas, took Neville in immediately and raised him in a similar fashion as his father. Mabel, the more dominant of the pair, is constantly surprised at how unlike his father Neville is, as she overpowers his personality and rarely sees the glimpses of constitution of character that he shows at school. Neville was easily intimidated by his gran, and thus messed up even emotional magic as a child, leading them to believe he might be a squib. His grandfather often tried to encourage the boy, sneaking him small gifts and cookies when Mabel wasn't looking. For this, Nevlle felt extremely close to his grandfather, so when he died of a heart attack in front of a six-year-old Neville, the boy was scared and lost.

Trevor was a gift of relief from his gran, a bit of a celebration when he got his letter of acceptance to Hogwarts. The whole family was quite excstatic, as the Longbottoms hadn't had a squib in their line for at least 7 generations, going back to wacky cousin Lisa, but then again, she was a bit of a kook. Rumour has it she had a bit of an accident with a Bowtruckle when she was young, the poor thing.

At the sorting cerimony, Neville was all but convinced he was going to be a Hufflepuff like his grandfather had been, so when the hat called out Gryffindor, he was taken aback. Of course he was happy to be in his father's house, but it was certainly unexpected, for both him and his gran. Having grown up an only child with no real playmates his age, being thrown into a dorm with four other boys provided a bit of a social shock. The others often poked fun at him for having "old lady" behaviours; he always made his bed and ate strange food (usually high in fibre) as though the photo of his nan might hop out of its frame and box his ears if he didn't.

Neville wasn't used to change, so it took him a good long time to come around. After several nights sitting up with the other boys while wearing his onesies, he began to ease up, becoming less nervous around his dormmates. The ease didn't extend to anyone else, though. In classes Neville would clam up except when called on, at which he usually blushed, stumbled and made an overall fool of himself.

In his subsquent years, Neville continued to come into his own, speaking up more and even making the occasional friend. He became quite close to Professor Sprout, not only because of her being the bubbly antithesis of his Gran, but also because she nurtured his natural talent for herbology. As far as the rest of his subjects went, however, he still struggled without much reward. He turned to Hermione for help and found her quite similar to his gran in her no-nonsense approach.

Though he avoided potions and anything Snape-related like the plague, he was able to keep his head above water in most of his classes while excelling in herbology. He considered becoming an Herbist after school, but as it became more apparent to him that the Dark Lord was coming back, he began considering another career option. His parents had both been aurors, and he felt he owed it to them to follow in their footsteps, to make them proud. He kept his wishes to himself, though, as he was afraid of looking foolish.

In his fifth year, Neville firmly backed Harry, and when the time came he refused to be left behind. Since coming to Hogwarts, he has become much more self assured and forceful. In the department of mysteries, he held his ground nearly as well as Harry, and with much less experience. His bravery and commitment were put to the test, and he passed easily, only cementing his desire to become an auror. When he broke the news to his Gran over the summer, she did not respond as he expected, but rather encouraged him greatly.

Wand Type: 9.5 inches, maple, phoenix feather core
Blood Type: A (okay, joke was lost, but it was bad anyway). Pure, of course.

Student's Year: 6th
Which house would your character prefer? Gryffindor
Why? Gryffindor is about courage of spirit, and as we all know it takes courage to stand up to one's enemies, but much more to stand up to one's friends. Time and time again, Neville has shown persistence and bravery despite terrible circumstances, and his noble spirit is a lion's is ever there was one.

Give an example of your role-playing: The sun was just peaking over the tops of the trees when Neville climbed his way up the spiral stairs toward the school owlery, parchment clutched in hand. The large wooden door creaked open as he pushed, and the overwhelming yet altogether familiar scent of owl dung wafted out into the hall, nearly choking the pudgy-faced boy. He hurried in and stuck his head out of the window, taking a few gasps of fresh dusk air before turning back in and surveying the remaining postal owls.

Most of the birds were still asleep, heads tucked down into mounds of ruffled feathers, though a few early risers had already awoken for the night hunt. Not wanting to disturb any of the sleeping owls (seeing as how they tended to be grumpy, as a scar on his right hand attested to), Neville walked through the rows of stands and found a small tawny who surveyed him with narrow amber eyes, as if sizing him up. Neville held out and arm and flinched as the owl landed on it with a flurry of wings and feathers.

He rolled up the parchment and slid it into the owl's leg cuff.
"Errm...Mabel Longbottom....if you please," he said timidly, and the owl seemed to think about it before taking off and soaring into the falling darkness outside.

Re: Neville Longbottom (work in progress)
Ryo,

I do appreciate your applying but it's very rude to post an unfinished application. A better thing to do would be work on it on your computer in a program such as word or, (I've done this myself) write it up and email it to yourself.

Re: Neville Longbottom (work in progress)
While it may seem rude to you, it is common on other boards to either have a place to post notice of interest in a character or to have a board for wip's so that the administrators are aware of forthcoming applications. Without this, I thought it best to place my application up while finishing it to give a bit of prior notice to those who judge apps so they may wait a day or so to see the app before continuing the often arduous process of recruiting another player for the character.

Re: Neville Longbottom (work in progress)
Ryo,

Hey! Long time no see... though, not sure if you recognise the username for me or not. 'Tis Lia from AaH. ^.^

Anyway, I'm really glad to see you applying, but just so you know, we can't look at the app until it's completed 100% and that's with the RP sample. If you could get that up ASAP we'd really appreciate it that way we can get the whole application process underway. Also, as per the bloodtype, we mean Pureblood, Halfblood, Muggleborn, etc.

Glad you didn't give up on the app, and I look forward to seeing your RP sample soon. If you can get that up within the next couple of days that would really rock. Thanks!

Re: Neville Longbottom (work in progress)
*G* I think we had an overlapping of times is what happened. I saw the app up without the RP sample, posted what I did and then I think at the same time you were posting the rp sample.

Let me discuss it with the other admins and I'll let you know if we need more or what not. ^.^

Re: Neville Longbottom (work in progress)
Ryo,

The application itself looks good. The only two things we'd like changed/expanded upon are the bloodtype and the history. I don't know if you saw my post to you, but by bloodtype we meant pureblood, halfblood, etc.

And, for history, Neville is a sixth year and would have a fair amount of history especially given that he's a canon character. Expand on what he's done the past five years a bit more (though, we do know some of it from the books, but that's more from Harry's POV) and we should be good to go.

Thanks!

Re: Neville Longbottom (work in progress)
Ryo,

Thanks for editing in and it looks great. So, accepted in and welcome aboard.

*pause* now, all you need to do is apply for a certain OotP member by the name of Bill Weasley and we'll be all set... *smiles innocently*

I'll get all the info you'll need off to you asap.
