Not An Icon
Kurt Cobain is not a "grunge god", he's not even remotely close. The average teenager's automatic reaction to the word "grunge" is Nirvana. So many people think that Nirvana created this so called grunge sound. Kurt Cobain is a terrible guitar player and a terrible writer, and a terrible person in general. The only good part of Nirvana was Dave and Krist. Cobain stole song ideas from the real artists and called them his own, ie: The Pixies, Neil Young, and Mudhoney. Kurt Cobain is a disgrace and the only reason that people see him as an idol and a "grunge god" is because he played stolen crappy teen angst music and became well-known he then commited suicide and since Americans love sob stories, he is seen as an idol.

Re: Not An Icon
Wow. Where to start?
Is there anything wrong with associating the word "grunge" to "Nirvana"? Nirvana is without a doubt the most popular grunge band in the history of grunge bands. So what? They were popular for a reason-- people liked them. They wrote music that no one else had heard before, not only that, but they made it known to nearly everyone. Nirvana's sound is the epitome of grunge. Wikipedia defines Grunge as: "As a style of music, it is generally characterized by 'dirty' guitar, strong riffs, and heavy drumming. Grunge is also popularly referred to as the Seattle Sound." Hmm... that sounds a lot like Nirvana to me.
Kurt Cobain may not have been a very good guitar player, but he was a songwriter. Songs from previous times were about "good times" and "living it up" (i.e. Guns N Roses), Nirvana changed it to something that they felt... yes, their angsty songs. Maybe more people could relate to hard times. That, my friend, is good songwriting. Getting a message out to the people and them relating.
And have you ever heard of "influences"? All bands have them. Nirvana may have been influenced by The Pixies, Neil Young, and Mudhoney, but their music was their own. You won't find anything like "Lithium" or "Heart Shaped Box" by the Pixies.
And the suicide. Kurt said he killed himself because he couldn't handle fame. He didn't want it.
Here's a link to the original if you want to read it:

Lastly, Kurt is an idol to me because of:
1. His music
2. That he didn't care if you didn't like him. He didn't care what other people thought of him or his music. He was his own person until the end.

So why do I care if you don't like Kurt Cobain? I don't. What I do care about is this whole thing of lying about him. Before you say Kurt stole music, you'd better check your facts again.

Who called him a "grunge god"? I don't think anyone here did. That's as subjective as saying Kurt Cobain couldn't play guitar...
He was the Godfather of Grunge anyway :P

Nicely said, Nava.
I'm all for the 1st ammendment and all, but lol, it's kinda a bad idea to post a Cobain-bashing thread on a Nirvana tribute site...

I'm a Nirvana fan,

but Kurt is no-one's idol (even if people claim so)

yeah, he didn't care about what people thought
BUT he didn't care about ANYTHING!!

this is not a good thing at all.

he was on drugs most of the time, destroying both his own
life and that of his family - wife and child who is now fatherless. Getting off drugs is a will-power thing - if he cared about his family enough, he would have kicked his habit along with any other problems.

An 'idol' is someone who you look up to, someone you'd like to be like, someone you respect.

As a Nirvana fan, I hate to admit this, or to even come to terms with this.... but Kurt deserves no respect other than for his songs. He let A LOT of people down. The angsty populace could have healed with him, instead they went down with him in a wave of suicides.

Re: Not An Icon
lol, but that's if it was suicide, the saga continues...

personally I think Courtney had something to do with his death, which is such a cliched thing for a Nirvana fan like myself to say...

however, why do many Nirvana fans say this?

Because we understand their history a lot better than anyone else. We understand Courtney's frustration that Nirvana had almost instant fame, where as Hole (who are technically better musicians, with arguably equally good songs) fizzled.

Listen to her solo debut "America's Sweetheart" and she pretty much confesses.

I am a Nirvana fan, but I know Kurt didn't create the sound. There were so many grunge bands way before Nirvana like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, TAD, Wipers, etc. Only idots would say he started the sound.
