As a longtime WHO and Townshend fan, I'm loath to broach the subject; but I have a bad feeling about this. I think he just stepped over the line at some point, however innocently. Perhaps it was his obsession with his childhood abuse and subsequent "research" that drew him in, but I think that once you've pulled out the credit card and gone forward, you've crossed the barrier from research into "interest". I think this will be his undoing, or at least the end of his career.
Re: Pete Townshend
Agreed. I love the Who but Townsend is probably a troubled guy--based on Tommy and other stuff--I think he probably was crying out for help. Its too bad.
Re: Pete Townshend
I recently read something to the effect that he was cleared of all charges, having proven his innocence. Evidently, he'd contacted the authorities in the past and explained that he was going to go to such sites for research prior to logging on to them. Think of that what you will, but the authorities were satisfied...
I still can't help but feel like he's dodging a bullet here, and that he needs some counselling.
There is no spoon.

pray tell
And what, pray tell, my friend, makes you think that YOU are qualified to counsel Peter Townshend? Have you any psychiatric training whatsoever? Any intensive mental issues capabilities? I just find it odd. And funny, too, I should think.
My friends, I apologize for my shortness of breath, but I just climbed over two flights of stairs to get to the computer. If I had any experience with psychotic episodes vis-a-vis Mr. Townshend I would be more than happy to lend my ample services.
