Second changes
Derik had been very quiet over the last few days, not moody exactly but deep in thought. He would either take long walks with Klutz, usually ending with the dog being to exhausted to chew up anything, or in his room with his nose buried in any of over half the books from Nick’s library, tentatively borrowed but as yet still on various surfaces in his room. Concerned friends would call off and on during the day to remind him of an appointment or to check up on him. When he answered the calls he was cheerful enough but short, promising to either see them later on, which didn’t happen, or taking off for whatever he was late for.
This morning was different; he was actually awake when Nick was preparing to leave for work, with a breakfast of cold pizza, coffee and the newspaper on the table. Derik watched his father carefully for a few moments then started talking.
“Dad, something’s been bothering me for a while and I finally figured out what it is. I would like to try law school again if it’s alright with you.”
