The Jewel (Don't Look Back) Repost The Jewel (Don’t Look back) My mother was packed and ready to move. She has fair skin and her hair was brown and shoulder-length. She was wearing a green pleated skirt along with a white blouse with a flower pattern on the front. She was carrying a new woven handbag. In it were only the things she need for the journey. One of the phrases she always tells me is “in this life, take only the things you need.” “Good bye Wierdan” she said. She paused for a moment and continued,” I hope you’ll become a great wizard someday” “Where are you going mother?” I asked quietly. “A place far away from here” she replied “Can’t I come with you?” “I wished you could… honestly, but some things are better left alone” At that moment, she removed her bracelet from her hand. Then she reached for my hand and opened my palms. Afterwards, she handed me the bracelet. I look at the shiny object: it was a series of diamonds held together by a fine thread. One of diamonds was emerald-green while the rest was white. “I want you to have this. Even though I may not come back from where I want to go, remember me” “Of course. I’ll never forget you” A tear rolled down her cheek. “Good bye my child. I hope we’ll meet again in another place.” She left the house. It was cloudy day outside with howling winds. Slowly she moved towards the rocky hills beside the house taking hesitant steps. She never looked back. Another phrase she constantly repeats is “never look back”. I couldn’t take my eyes off her until she disappeared over the hill. * * * * * That was a hundred years ago. Since then, I mastered the art of wizardry. Through that, I became immortal. Yet, I rarely felt joy. I needed someone to bring me happiness and share my fears. I needed my mother. Fifty years after my mother’s departure, I began my journey to find here. I wanted to follow her but my father urged me to let her go and that she needed to go alone. By then, I had already started my wizard training. The training was long and strenuous. I could not let her departure interfere. I started with a visit to my father. He was in the house where we (my family) lived; the same house my mother left fifty years before. He sat in a chair near the fireplace. The room was bright with the light coming from the window. “Hello father” “Wierdan, it is good to see you again” “Yes. We have much to discuss” “I imagine. So you became a great wizard? I imagine it was quite difficult” “Yes it was. I had to survive on with what little my master gave me. The rest, I had to find myself. But I went through it just fine” “Good! Good! Your mother would be proud” “That is what I want to discuss.” “What about her?” “Where she’d gone.” “Don’t tell me you want to look for her after all these years?” I nodded. We know each other so well that with few words, we can predict what the other will do. “Are you crazy? The trail is fifty-years cold!” “I thought insanity ran in the family?” “Yes but occasionally reason must take over” “To hell with that” He sighed and moved over to the window. “Very well: if you must. Before she went over that hill, she talked about leaving or rather about someplace better than this. Any place is better than this but I would rather stay in this hell-hole than leave to some place that may or may not exist.” He paused for a minute. “That’s all I remember.” “Thank you… I have all that I need to know.” “Do you?” “Yes.” “You were always so mysterious.” “I have to go but I will be back soon” “Be sure you do. I liked to brag about a having a powerful wizard-daughter. You know how that silences people?” We both laughed. I opened the door and made my way across the hill. I took hesitant steps towards the lush forest over the rocky hills. Just before I disappeared from my father’s view, he shouted: “Don’t look back.” |
