Veganism?
Lately I've been thinking about becoming a vegan. I've been a vegetarian for about 4 years now.

But I think the one thing that gets in my way is the inconvenience of it. Like eating food at other people's places and not being able to have what they are eating. Which I guess is ridiculous because you don't become a vegan to convenience anyone. It's about animals and nature in general.

Anyone have any insights on veganism?

Re: Veganism?
I find that same inconvenience with vegetarianism. Family gatherings are difficult when it comes to mealtimes, not only for the non-meat issue but also because we mainly eat organic. Unfortunately I haven't found a good solution to this one yet ... taking food along is an option but not always a convenient or practical one.

My biggest concern with veganism would be the health aspects, but if you're used to a vegetarian diet you may already be getting the protein and other nutrients you need from vegetable sources. I rely on eggs and cheese for protein and sometimes even have to eat fish or chicken, or else I just can't get enough protein and my health starts falling apart. If you can do it and remain healthy, then I say go for it ... ideologically I'd prefer to be a vegan but practically am not sure I'll ever be able to do it successfully.

Re: Veganism?
I've been paying more attention to my health lately so I've been balancing between protein that comes from animal sources (eggs and dairy) and protein from plant sources. If I decided to go vegan I'd probably increase the plant sources over a long period of time. So I'd get used to it and it'd be more natural.

I think that you can also be a vegan in the sense of watching how animal products are used in your possessions also, if one isn't ready to make the food plunge. Like using products that aren't tested on animals, not wearing leather or fur, things like that.

Re: Veganism?
I personally eat a lot of cute animals who never did anything adverse to any form of life. But I have a sister who is a vegan. She wasn't getting enough protein from plant sources. We went to health food stores all over town trying to find a suitable source of protein that was vegan safe. We ended up with a protein mix loaded with soy protein. But apparently it tastes less than wonderful. I'm just saying that its really really really hard to be a vegan and taking it slow is always good. I admire anyone who commits themselves to veganism. I suppose its good for karma and is the right thing to do on a cosmic level. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Re: Veganism?
You may want to suggest to your sister that she purchase a book on vegan health or check online. Because there are lots of plant sources of protein, other than soy. Such as beans, nuts, seeds. Even some vegetables/starches have low levels of protein.

Re: Veganism?
Can you recommend a good book for me to get for her?

Re: Veganism?
I've heard that Becoming Vegan is a good book to look into.

Also this website link http://www.veganhealth.org/shv/index_html#protein goes into the protein section of website on vegan health. It lists mainly common sources of proten, but does mention some you wouldn't think of, such as potatoes, broccoli, and rice.

Those two more have to do with health, I'm sure there are lots of books for recipes also, such as Vegan Meals for One or Two: Your Own Personal Recipes, Conveniently Vegan: Turn Packaged Foods into Delicious Vegetarian Dishes, and The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen.

The reason I list links to amazon.com is because you can read people's reviews there, and buy books used, which means they are cheaper.

Re: Veganism?
Oh also, when I buy vegetarian cookbooks, one thing that I like to make sure is that the recipes aren't too crazy, that I'll pretty much have the ingredients on hand and won't have to search for them. So I tried to list some vegan cookbooks that are rumored to have such recipes.

Re: Veganism?
I have not really made a big effort to support her in her endeavor. I have felt kind of bad because of it. But there was really nothing I could think of to do. So I thought maybe I could incorporate some vegan dishes into the meals that I ate so that maybe the family could, you know, eat together or something. Its a lot easier to find vegetarian cookbooks than vegan. I've been looking for them locally but, you know what, Amazon.com works really well to and requires less gas. Vegan Meals for One or Two looks good. Thanks

Re: Veganism?
You're welcome. I think she'll be pleasantly surprised even by little things you do to support her. It's nice when people do things like not make rude comments about not eating meat, or not suggest going out to eat at a steak house.

I'm a big fan of stir fry. Just today I picked up some tofu, because I'm making stir fry tonight. Not that tofu is necessary, but it's good protein. Mmm, food, lol, I adore zuccinni.

Re: Veganism?
My step father beat me to the vegan dish thing. He made a three course meal the main dish being vegetable curry with some kind of funky sauce. It was spicy, but I suppose thats all right because the only one who doesn't like hot stuff in the food is me. Hey, whats tofu taste like? My sister and my step father love eating it. I touched a piece once, but thats as far as it got. Its very... squishy.

Re: Veganism?
Tofu doesn't have much of a flavor in and of itself, which makes it great to use in a wide variety of dishes because it absorbs the flavors of whatever else is in the dish. Even the extra firm tofu can be soft/squishy, but if it's frozen for a day or two and thawed before use, it has a firmer more "meaty" texture.

And I wholeheartedly agree with Julia, even little things to show support go a long way.
