What is your favorite Mauser ?
My favorite mauser is my 1943 Husky M38 Swede, close 2nd is my 1926 BRNO Czech VZ-24.

The recent Turk Mausers are great also, a little long for my tastes, but the price is certainly right.

Shooter, I have a Turk mauser - but it's a short one, bent bolt, etc.

Figure it'll make a nice scoped rifle since I don't have to bend the bolt or anything like I would with some of the other rifles.

Without a doubt mine would have to be the Russian M-44. I find it almost as accurate as the Misson Nigant, while shorter and easier to handle. For total accuracy I would have to lean to the Nigant, but feal that ease of handling gives the M-44 the edge.

Warrior Mac,..my friend it seems you have confused the Russian M-44 with a Mauser. When indeed the M-44 is a Mosin Nagant Carbine, issued to the front line troops late in the war. The M-44 like the M-38 is a very handy and versital carbine,..fairly accurate and packing helluva lot of punch from the 7.62x54r round.

But for accuracy at anything more than 150 to 200 yrds,...its hard to beat a good Mauser with its silky smooth bolt.

I have to agree with you there, guess I just got carried away in the spirit of things. I do have several mausers, my favorite of that line would have to be my m-48 Yugoslavian Mauser. It has allot of the features I liked in the M-44 and is highly accurate. My first love though was my Turkish Mauser, after cleaning and cleaning and finally getting the goo off of it, I fell in love with the woodwork. Question for you though, My Turkish mauser has Germany engraved in the barrel. Does this mean that it was made in Germany? or does it simply refer to the fact that it is patterned after the German Mauser? Thanks before hand for any words of wisdom you might have in this area. Still kinda new to the Mauser world, but addicted to it non the less.... Happy shooting...

WM, if that " German " or " Germany" marking is on the barrel near the muzzle, it is probably following an " 8mm". I don't have my Turk handy, but I believe my Turk and VZ24's were marked by Century as " 8mm German caliber", in addition to the standard CAI import marks. I don't own an M48, but I would hazard a guess that they are marked in the same manner.

M-44
I have an m-44, thanks for clearing that up about not being a mauser, i was unaware of that. Anyone know what is the best brand of ammo to shoot in the m-44. I use 7.62x54r made at a gun shop, but it is sometimes hard to load in the chamber.

BckPckrpckng, this is our old site. We rarely check it. Please stop in at www.tmorg-forums.com

If your rifle has a chambering problem, you probably need to polish the chamber. get a .45 pistol bore brush, wrap it with 0000 steel wool, coat it with CLP, chuck it in a cordless drill on LOW speed and polish away, but DO NOT overdo it !

As for ammo, I use a lot of surplus Albanian 7.62x54r myself. I've had good luck with it and it is brass cased, but corrosive like most surplus ammo.

I think the best deal currently is for the surplus Yugoslavian 7.62x54r. It is also brass cased and corrosive, but I have heard good things about it.

For non-corrosive new commercial production, your coices are limited to S&B and Wolf. ( Winchester just added 7.62x54r to their new Metric line, but it is just repackaged S&B ). The S&B is my personal favorite and is brass cased. The Wolf is a bit cheaper but is copperwashed steel cased, it does work, I just prefer the brass cased stuff.

Thanks
