What's the one magazine you can't break into?
Everyone has a magazine they're determined to get published in, but after numerous queries, it still hasn't happened. I know Jenna's mentioned a few in her newsletters. Mine's Cosmo.
American Girl. I was published twice when I was younger, as a subscriber, but as a writer (even when I don't remind them that I'm only 4 years older than when I was a subscriber), they don't seem to enjoy me.

Re: What's the one magazine you can't break into?
Has there been a change in editoral staff? Or has the ownership (and direction of the magazine) changed? Maybe that's the reason?

PS- For me, it's Essence.

Good Housekeeping
I rarely even get a reply from Good Housekeeping, though I've written for Family Circle, Woman's Day, redbook, and Woman's World. I actually gave up pitching them.

Re: Lordy
Oh my gawd, how could I forget the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction! At least 25 submits there. Started off in the small press (in prehistory) with Kevin J. Anderson, Marge Simon, and Bruce Boston--I hate to tell you where THEY are now.
Starlog
Speaking of science fiction, I've queried two editors at Starlog and have not gotten replies from either, despite follow-up emails. This would have been about a popular ST fanfilm, which I hoped would make a great story, but I haven't heard back yet.
How long has it been? Did you snail mail them first? Conventional mail seems to work faster on a response. The email glut is notorious at big media trade magazines like Starlog.

mag can't get into
I can't get into, as in, "can't get into it, dude..." Soldier of Fortune Martha Stuart Living Knitting Magazine Woman's Day Playgirl/Playboy Crafts for Christmas Forbes McCall's Architectural Digest Cosmo
If I were inclined to submit to mags at the moment, I might enjoy: Newsweek
Time
The New Yorker
Atlantic Monthly
Oprah (inspirational stories)
Publisher's Weekly
Salon.com
Wired
PC Week
Arizona Highways
Shape
Prevention
The New Yorker is the pub I most covet, not becuase I read it but because people I respect, like S. King write for it. I had an accident a month after he did, but they never called to ask me to write my story. Ah well.
Starlog
Triceratops,
It's been a few weeks since my last email. It's been a few weeks between each email, actually. I never tried to snail mail since email is supposed to be the choice method now. I could try snailmail, that wouldn't be a problem
Regular mail on top of an email is the best assurance you're going to get. Believe me, been there. I emailed my agent four times with no response, but got one from a regular letter. Don't even know if it was an Internet glitch or not.
Just play it safe. I use the shotgun approach. If I'd a carrier pigeon that would have went along with the skywriting.

Psych Today...
Linda, have you tried the FOB news section? It's much, much easier to break into. I believe the news editor is Willow Lawson (but check the masthead to be sure). Once you break into that section, they'll assign you short pieces (and you'll have an easier time getting bigger assignments -- it worked for my husband!).
