Re: Where Your Road Leads (Sequel to It Had To Be You)
Chapter 21

Kendall was pregnant? He could tell Joe was still talking, for he could see his lips moving, but the only thing he could hear was the voice in his head that kept repeating the word “baby”.

“…got to start taking better care of herself.” Joe stopped when he realized that Zach wasn’t listening. “Zach?”

Zach sighed. “I’m sorry, Joe. You were saying?” He tried to focus on the man in front of him.

“I was saying she has to start taking care of herself, Zach.” Joe looked Zach in the eye. “I am sure it’s been an adjustment for the two of you, Kendall especially. To have just lost a child and then find out that you’re expecting another one? It’s a lot to deal with.” Joe watched as Zach looked away, his eyes narrowing in concern when he saw the muscle in Zach’s jaw working. “But Zach, you need to make sure that she eats and that she rests. Her current condition isn’t healthy. If she keeps this up, she’s going to end up harming the baby.”

“I’ll take care of it.” Zach’s voice was flat.

“I know this has to be hard for the both of you, but just remember that there’s every reason to believe that this child will live a long and happy life.” Joe was interrupted by the sound of his pager going off. Checking its message, he stood up slowly. “I need to go see my patient.” He smiled gently. “I’ll let you know when you can see her.”

Zach nodded slowly. “Thanks, Joe.” He slouched in the chair as he watched the older man walk away, his mind focusing on Joe’s words. If she keeps this up, she’s going to end up harming the baby. Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath. Was that what she was doing? he thought to himself. No. He shook his head to remove the unwelcome thought, uncomfortable when it wouldn’t immediately go away. She wouldn’t, would she?

************

Knock. Knock.

Joe poked his head inside Kendall’s door and smiled. “Can I come in?”

Kendall looked over at Bianca before she nodded and shifted slightly, pulling the bedding up further to cover her chest.

Bianca stood up. “I’ll leave you two alone to talk.” She bent and kissed Kendall’s forehead. “I’ll be back a little later,” she promised and walked to the door.

Joe waited for Bianca to leave before he spoke. “How are you feeling?” he asked, as he made his way over to the bed.

“Tired,” she whispered back, as she reached up to touch her head. “My head…”

“That’s to be expected.” Joe sat down in the empty chair beside Kendall’s bed. “What’s the last thing you remember?”

Kendall frowned, her forehead wrinkling in concentration. “I remember starting to watch a movie…something with Cary Grant, I think…” Her voice faded away when she remembered why she turned the TV off. Zach.

“Anything else?” he asked, as he watched a shadow pass across her face.

She cleared her throat and continued. “Yes. I remember getting in the car and driving to work…” Suddenly she could hear the sound of a horn in her ears and she flinched.

“What is it Kendall?” Joe reached out and covered her hand with his.

“A horn,” she murmured softly, as she raised her eyes to his. “There was a horn. I was…distracted.” Kendall removed her hand from underneath Joe’s and pulled it to her chest. “I had started to drift into another lane.” She felt her cheeks flood with heat.

“What else do you remember?” he pressed gently.

“I remember closing my eyes…” Her eyes widened. “On my God!” she exclaimed as she tried to sit up. “What happened to me?”

Joe immediately moved to adjust her pillows behind her to prop her up. “Easy, Kendall.”

“But I-” Her horrified eyes looked into his kind ones.

“Shh. From what I’ve been told, you lost control of the car and you crashed into the guardrail on I-81. Luckily for you, the car was slowing down as it approached it.” He reached out and took her left hand. “The good news, young lady, is that both you and the baby are fine.”

“Both me and the baby are fine?” she repeated woodenly.

Joe nodded, smiling. “You have a very resilient little one in there,” he said as he gestured to her still flat stomach. “But, Kendall, he or she can’t take care of themselves on their own. You need to do your part.”

Kendall dropped her eyes and placed her shaky right hand over her stomach.

“You came in here malnourished, dehydrated and exhausted.” Joe sighed heavily. “That concerned me more than the slight concussion and bump on your head from your accident.”

Although Kendall could hear him speaking, she couldn’t focus on the words. All she could do was to gently rub her stomach.

“I want you to promise me that you’re going to start taking better care of yourself,” he demanded quietly. “I don’t ever want to see you looking like this again.” Joe waited for her to meet his gaze. “You know better than this, Kendall.”

Kendall nodded slowly, her throat tight.

“Okay, then. I need to go see another patient. I’ll be back.” He squeezed her hand and released it. “Are you going to be okay?”

Unable to find her voice, she nodded again and watched him leave. She managed to hold it together until the door closed behind him. Once it did, she gave into her tears.

************

Bianca closed the door to Kendall’s room behind her and headed back to the waiting area to find her brother-in-law staring off into space. “Zach?”

“Bianca.” Zach hurriedly blinked away the film of moisture that covered his eyes and sat up straight. “How is she?”

“She’s okay, Zach,” she said in relief as she sank down into the chair next to him. Bianca closed her eyes and leaned her head back against the wall. She could feel the tears she held back earlier begin to flood her eyes and took an unsteady breath.

Zach watched helplessly as the tears began to slide down her cheeks. “Hey,” he whispered gently as he stood up and pulled her into his arms. He felt her wrap her arms tightly around his waist and hold on, for what seemed like dear life, as she cried. Zach could hear her voice but he could barely make out her words.

“…my fault…Joe was right…” she mumbled into his chest, her tears dampening the front of his shirt.

“Shh,” he whispered, lowering his chin to the top of her head. Zach closed his eyes. If anyone was to blame, it was me, he thought to himself. When Bianca seemed to run out of tears, he moved his hands to her shoulders and gently pushed her away to look into her eyes. “What do you say we go get some coffee and talk?”

Bianca wiped her eyes and nodded, and managed a watery smile. “Thank you, Zach.” She felt him wrap an arm around her and together they headed to the cafeteria.

************

It had to be a mistake, she thought to herself, as she wiped her tears away with the back of her hand. How could I be pregnant? She hadn’t been with Zach since the night Nicholas died and she had been on the pill. Joe had to be wrong. Panicking, her mind raced until it found what it had been looking for. ‘I need you, Zach. Make love to me.’

Kendall sucked in her breath. “The dream,” she whispered to herself. At least that’s what she had thought it was, until she woke up the next morning naked, her body pleasantly sore in all the right places. “Oh, God,” she whimpered, as she brought her hand to her mouth. “I’m pregnant.” She could feel the dull throbbing in her head intensifying as well as a sharp pain beginning to materialize behind her eyes. Was this God’s idea of a joke? Give the woman who already failed once as a mother another chance to repeat her mistakes? Kendall could feel the sob rising in her throat. Give her another child to love only to take him or her away because she wasn’t worthy of another child in the first place? Suddenly she couldn’t breathe. What if she caused the death of this one, too?

Her stomach churning, Kendall threw back the bedclothes and slowly got out of bed, pulling out her IV as she stood. She had barely managed the short walk to the bathroom without collapsing before her stomach rebelled, and she was forced to her knees to empty its contents into the toilet. Reaching up she pressed the handle and closed her eyes, hearing the whoosh of the water as it removed the trace of her recent weakness. Suddenly exhausted, she sat down on her heels before turning and lowering herself to the floor. Rolling over onto her side, Kendall curled up into a ball, hot tears streaming down her face.

That’s where Anita found her an hour later, sound asleep on the cool tile floor.

************

Bianca felt Zach press a warm cup of coffee into her hands. “Thanks.” She took a small sip and smiled as she saw him place a muffin in front of her. “Taking lessons from Myrtle?”

Zach flushed uncomfortably. “You should eat something.” When he saw her arch an eyebrow, he sighed. “I know they’re not as good as hers, but it seems like muffins are always a part of “these” types of conversations.”

She smiled as she thought of her friend. “You’re right about that. They usually accompany her wisdom.” Bianca’s smile faded. “What happened to us, Zach?” she asked as she began to peel the Saran wrap off the muffin. “When did we become so…so complacent?” Her sad eyes searched his. “We knew there was something wrong. Why didn’t we make her get help?” She blinked away her tears. “How did we ever think she could get better on her own?”

Lowering his eyes, he reached for his own cup of coffee and took a sip. Bianca was absolutely right. “I guess we didn’t want to believe she was as bad off as she was.” Zach unconsciously tightened his grip around the paper cup when he thought of the last time he saw his wife. The guilt intensified, squeezing his chest. How the hell did he leave her and walk away when she looked like that?

Bianca reached out and placed her hand over his before he squashed the cup completely and wore the coffee. “Everyone handles grief differently.”

Zach shook his head. Kendall was doing more than grieving and it scared him to death. His mind kept going back to the baby. Their baby. He pushed aside his own feelings about the baby and wondered just how long she had known – and why she didn’t tell him.

“I should’ve been there, Zach.” Bianca’s voice was quiet as she picked at her muffin. “I know what it’s like to lose a child. I went through that with Miranda.” Her eyes were sad. “I should’ve-’”

“Don’t.” His voice was rough. “Don’t do that to yourself.” Zach pushed himself away from the table. “You’re not the one married to her. You weren’t the one who was living in the same house with her.” He gave a cynical laugh as he rubbed his forehead. She’s not even living there now, he reminded himself.

Bianca looked up in surprise. “What?”

“You don’t know?” Zach asked in surprise. “Well, I wouldn’t have either if it wasn’t for Marian.”

“Marian?” Bianca repeated as she tried to place the name. “Marian as in Marian Chandler?” At Zach’s nod, she continued. “What does she have to do with anything?”

“She called me while I was in Vegas.”

“Vegas?” Bianca couldn’t help the disapproval that crept into her voice.

Ignoring her implied question, he continued. “She found someone who wants to buy Kendall’s old condo, but there’s a problem.”

“That’s great.” When she saw the muscle in Zach’s jaw working, she leaned forward. “Wait. What’s the problem?”

Zach stood up, picked up his empty coffee cup and the muffin he hadn’t touched, and carried them both to the trash. Without turning around, he answered “Kendall’s living there.” He cleared his throat. “I need to head back.” Without waiting for an answer, he headed towards the door, Bianca following in his wake.

************

Zach was just approaching Kendall’s room when its door opened and Anita came out, closing it softly behind her. “Anita,” he acknowledged as he reached past her for the handle, intent on entering Kendall’s room.

Anita reached out to grab his arm and steered him away from the door. Her eyes returned to the door behind her before they met his. “She’s asleep.”

He stopped short when he realized something wasn’t right. “Anita, what’s wrong? How’s Kendall?”

“She’s fine now, Zach. Why don’t you let her rest?”

Zach caught the word “now”. “What do you mean ‘now’, Anita?” When Anita tried to avoid the question, he snapped. “Damn it, Anita, she’s my wife! What the hell happened?” He watched Anita jump and he lowered his voice, sighing softly. “I’m sorry, but I need to know what happened.”

She nodded. “Of course, I didn’t mean-”

“Tell me.”

Anita thought back to her conversation with Kendall. Looking at the anxious man in front of her, she knew this wasn’t going to be easy.

“Kendall, you can’t push yourself like this. You need to take care of yourself and the baby.” Anita shook her head and helped Kendall back into bed, pulling the covers up over her.

“Bianca?” Kendall whispered hoarsely.

“She went with Zach to the cafeteria to get something to eat. I’ll tell you what. Why don’t you rest and I’ll go get Zach for you? Maybe he can convince you to stay in bed.”

Kendall shook her head. “Please don’t tell him about this,” she begged, her green eyes filling with tears.

“Honey, why not? It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Your body was just tired.” She pushed back a curl that had fallen on Kendall’s cheek. “Between the accident and the baby, he’ll understand-”

“He doesn’t know,” Kendall whispered, closing her eyes briefly as she pictured his reaction.

“Kendall, I know this probably isn’t the way you wanted him to find out, but-”Anita stopped when Kendall grabbed her hand and began squeezing it.

“You can’t tell him, Anita,” she panicked. “Promise me you won’t tell him!”

Anita heard the hysteria in her voice and tried to calm her down. “He’s worried about you. He needs to know about the baby in order to help you.”

“No!” Kendall sobbed. “He can’t. He can’t, he can’t, he can’t…” Her voice faded away as she cried.

“Shh,” Anita whispered as she pulled Kendall into a hug, her mind racing.
It’s only right that Kendall be the one to tell Zach about the baby, she thought to herself. “I promise I won’t tell him, honey. I promise.” She felt Kendall finally relax and helped her to lie back down.

Kendall searched Anita’s face and nodded before closing her eyes and finally allowing her body to rest.

“Anita?” Zach’s impatience was apparent in his voice.

She took a deep breath. “She managed to unhook her IV and get herself out of bed.”

“What was she doing out of bed? She was just in an accident, for God’s sake.” Zach thrust a hand through his hair.

“Evidently she was feeling sick, Zach. I found her curled up on the floor of the bathroom.” Anita watched the man in front of her pale.

“I need to see her.” It wasn’t a request.

Anita nodded. “For a few minutes. She needs to rest, Zach. Her body has been through a lot in the past twenty-four hours.”

So has the baby, he thought to himself. “Thank you for taking care of her,” he said quietly before turning and walking back to Kendall’s door. He hesitated briefly, before sighing and letting himself inside.

Re: Where Your Road Leads (Sequel to It Had To Be You)
Chapter 22

Zach quietly closed the door behind him and froze, his heart pounding in his chest. Suddenly unable to shift his eyes to the bed, afraid of what he might see, he closed them instead and leaned back against the door. She’s okay. Anita said so, he thought to himself. Taking a deep breath, he squared his shoulders and opened his eyes, and the breath he had begun to exhale immediately caught and lodged in his chest.

Oh my God. Zach wasn’t prepared for the sight that greeted him. He walked to the bed, his eyes never leaving his sleeping wife. Lowering himself into the chair beside her, he reached out to touch her cheek, gently brushing his fingers against her skin. “My God…” His voice faded away as his eyes traveled over her. Her face was thinner, her cheekbones more pronounced than he remembered…or liked. The bags under her eyes had a purplish-black tinge that matched the painful-looking egg on her temple, and her slight frame was dwarfed by the hospital gown, the short sleeves revealing her too thin arms as well as several bruises. When his gaze finally rested on her blanket-covered stomach, he reached out, his hand shaking, and gently placed his hand over where the child lay, only to pull it back as if he had been burned. Zach bent forward and put his head in his hands, the tears he had been trying to hold back slipping silently down his cheeks.

“No…please no,” she whispered.

Zach raised his head and sat up straighter in his chair. “Kendall?” His eyes flew to her face and he watched as her head turned back and forth on the pillow, her hand moving to her stomach.

“I can’t…” she sobbed quietly. “Not again.” Tears leaked from her closed eyes.

Hastily blinking away his own tears, Zach reached out to stroke her hair. She didn’t want the baby. He cleared his throat and began to murmur softly, his voice thick with emotion. “Shh, Kendall. Shh…” It seemed to work, for after a minute or two, she quieted down and slipped back into sleep.

The tightness in Zach’s chest intensified as he lifted Kendall’s left hand and, for the first time, noticed the absence of her wedding rings. He rubbed his thumb across the base of her ring finger before sandwiching her small hand between his large ones and bringing it to his lips. He closed his eyes. Once again it was his fault.

************

“So, do you think you two will have another baby?” Bianca asked as she cradled her tiny new nephew in her arms. Her eyes traveled from her brother-in-law, who had stood up suddenly and walked over to the window, and back to her sister.

Kendall rolled her eyes. “Bianca, I just had Nicholas less than twenty-four hours ago.” She tried to push herself back against the pillows but failed, her sudden indrawn breath making its way to her husband’s ears.

Zach turned away from the window, the expression on his face clearing as he hurried to Kendall’s side. “Hey,” he chastised softly. “Let me.” He helped her to lean forward and adjusted the pillows behind her before settling her comfortably against them.

“Thanks.” Kendall’s voice was soft, as were her eyes, as she reached up to touch his cheek.

Zach removed her hand from his face and brought it to his lips, kissing her palm. “You’re welcome.” Leaning forward, he placed a soft kiss on her lips before he sat back down in the chair he had vacated and threaded his fingers through hers, his eyes never leaving his wife’s.

Bianca smiled, watching the exchange in front of her. Kendall had never looked so happy. Lowering her eyes to the newborn in her arms, she shifted him slightly to free a hand to touch his soft cheek. “I think Nicholas needs someone he can grow up with, someone he can have adventures with and tell his secrets to.”

Kendall smiled at the wistful expression on her sister’s face. “A brother or a sister like we never had growing up…” Her voice faded away as she felt Zach’s hand tense in hers.

“You’d like that wouldn’t you, Nicholas?” Bianca asked the baby.

Zach gently disengaged his hand from Kendall’s. “I think Nicholas will be just fine,” he said firmly. “There are plenty of people already who love the boy.” He stood up again, kissed Kendall’s forehead, and headed towards the door.

“Zach?” Kendall waited until he turned around before trying to communicate silently with him. She watched in confusion as the shutters came down over his eyes and he turned to open the door.

“I’m going to go get some air. I’ll be back.” The sound of the door closing seemed to echo in the small private room.

Bianca looked at her sister with concern. “What just happened?”

Kendall just shook her head. “I have no idea.”

************

Zach slept fitfully, his cheek supported by his and Kendall’s hands.

He walked into the hospital room to find Kendall up and getting dressed. “Kendall? What are you doing out of bed?” He quickly moved towards her. “You were in an accident. You should be resting.”

Kendall continued dressing. “I’m fine.” She pulled the sweater over her head, lifting out the hair that was tucked in its neck. “I’m not staying here.” Avoiding his hands, she adjusted the sweater and reached for her jewelry on the small table beside the bed.

He couldn’t just stand there and do nothing. She needed to take care of herself and the baby. “What about the baby?”

“What baby?” She threaded the chandelier earrings through her ears and picked up her necklace.

He gestured at her stomach. “You’re pregnant with my child.”

She laughed shortly as she fastened the chain around her neck. “Not anymore.”

He woke up with a start to find Kendall awake and her eyes on him. “You’re awake.” He sat up slowly, his eyes on her face as he ran a hand through his hair.

“I could say the same about you,” she whispered hoarsely. Suddenly uncomfortable with the look in his eyes, she slid her hand out of his grasp and laid it on her stomach.

Zach felt his jaw clench as he tried to ignore her rejection. “How are you feeling?”

“Tired.” Her eyes narrowed as she reached up to touch the egg on her forehead and inhaled sharply.

He reached out and took her hand away from her face, laying it in her lap before she could pull it away from him again. “Do you remember what happened?”

Kendall closed her eyes as the sound of a horn reverberated in her ears. “Some.” She opened her eyes and took a deep breath, “Joe filled me in on the rest.”

“You were very lucky.”

Define lucky. I’m pregnant, she thought to herself, still unable to wrap her mind around her condition.

“You had us worried for a while,” he said with a slight smile. When she didn’t respond, the smile faded quickly from his face. “Kendall, what are you doing?”

His voice was quiet but she could hear the accusation in the tone and she felt the sting of tears. Not having the energy to fight, Kendall turned her face away and pulled the blankets higher around her.

“Talk to me, Kendall,” he begged. “Let me help you.” It’s not just you and me anymore.

“Please go, Zach,” she whispered as the hot tears rolled down her cheeks and onto the pillow.

“Not yet,” he argued. “We need to talk about the – .” He couldn’t even say the word ‘baby’.

“There’s nothing left to say,” she lied as she placed a hand on her stomach. “Nothing at all.”

“Kendall, don’t say that. We – ” His voice stopped when the door to Kendall’s room opened loudly behind him.

“Kendall! Sweetheart!”

Zach groaned as he saw his mother-in-law making her grand entrance, her hands outstretched. And the performance was ‘on’.

“Are you okay?” Erica hurried over to her daughter’s side, her cloying perfume trailing behind her. She spared a quick glance at her son-in-law. “I’m here now. You can leave.”

“Mom, I called you because I thought you should know about Kendall. That’s all – not to come here and attack Zach.” Bianca entered the room and walked over to Zach, placing her hands on his shoulders. She could feel the tension beneath her fingertips. “Zach has every right to be here.”

Zach covered one of Bianca’s hands with his. “It’s okay. I’ll leave you all alone to talk. Maybe you’ll have better luck than I did.” He ignored the “hmpf” that came from Erica and stood up, his eyes on his wife. “I’ll be back later to finish our conversation, Kendall.”

“Don’t bother, Zach,” Erica countered. “My daughter needs to rest. You’ll only upset her further.” She reached down and wiped the tears from Kendall’s cheeks. “Isn’t that right, darling?”

Kendall squeezed her eyes shut and nodded. If Erica could keep Zach away, she’d do whatever she could to help.

“See?” she taunted, her eyes gleaming when she saw Zach’s jaw clench. “Now, honey, you tell me what I can do for you. Are you hungry? Thirsty?” Erica reached for the pitcher and cup beside the bed and began to pour.

Bianca’s apologetic eyes met Zach’s. “I didn’t think –”

“No, you didn’t.” With one last look at his wife, Zach turned and left, closing the door behind him.

Re: Where Your Road Leads, sequel to IHTBY (Zach & Kenda
Chapter 23

Bianca stood there, stricken, before turning back towards her mother, her eyes furious. "Mother, how could you?"

Ignoring Bianca's outburst, Erica returned the pitcher and cup to the stand beside the bed. "There, darling," she soothed as she reached out and stroked Kendall's hair. "That horrible man's gone now." She sat daintily on the edge of the bed and pulled Kendall into her arms, shushing her daughter gently as she cried as if her heart was breaking.

Bianca felt sick, realizing that once again, she had made another mistake.

"You're going to be just fine, Kendall," Erica told her eldest daughter as she rocked her gently, cursing the day she had laid her eyes on Zach Slater and sighing when Kendall only sobbed louder. She looked past Bianca, her eyes narrowing, and reflexively tightened her arms around her daughter. "I'll make sure of it."

Bianca turned around to see Zach watching Erica and Kendall through the window, a mix of sadness and anger on his face. She tried and caught her brother-in-law's gaze, flushing when he turned away in disgust and disappeared from view. Hurriedly moving towards the door, she murmured "I'll be right back" and disappeared, determined to fix what she had broken.

************

"Zach!" She called after his retreating back. "Wait, please!" Bianca picked up speed, breaking into a jog when Zach disappeared. She just made it around the corner in time to see him enter the stairwell. She followed, ascending the first flight of stairs towards the roof before stopping short when she heard a click of a door echo from below. He was leaving. Damn it, Zach, she cursed. Pivoting sharply, she hurried back down the stairs and quickly descended the remaining flights before shoving open the door to the parking garage. It didn't take her long to find him, for Zach always parked far enough away from everyone else, determined to keep his Jag as pristine as the day he bought it. He was standing on the driver's side, hands on the roof, with his head dropped towards his chest.

"Zach."

He groaned inwardly. "Not now, Bianca."

She reached out to touch his shoulder and felt him tense beneath her hand. "Please, Zach, I didn't mean-”

"Don't. I don't want to hear it."

"Mom deserved to know," she said quietly.

He clenched his jaw. What was it they said? If you can't say anything nice...

"Kendall's going to be fine, Zach. It's just going to take some time." Bianca wondered if the words sounded as hollow to his ears as they did hers.

He laughed sarcastically. “At least another eight months." The flippant answer was out before he could stop it and he watched Bianca's forehead wrinkle in confusion.

"What is that supposed to mean?”

"Nothing. Forget I said anything." Zach straightened up and pulled out his keys, intent on getting away from everyone and everything, including Bianca and her well-meaning intentions. Opening the door, he sank into the plush leather and thrust the key in the ignition. Seconds later he was racing from the garage. He needed to think. And he really needed a drink.

Slater Residence

Zach stood on the front steps, frozen in place as his eyes greedily took in the house in front of him, the first place he had ever thought of as home. It had been weeks, but the ache was still there, the memory of the night he left pushing its way to the surface. Taking a deep breath, he unlocked the front door and pushed it open. He heard the hinges squeak as the foyer was revealed to his gaze and felt his heart pound in his chest. Involuntarily his eyes strayed to the staircase and for a moment he swore he could see her sitting there in the dark.

‘Welcome home.’

He could feel the hair on the back of his neck stand up as the icy tone of Kendall’s voice that night echoed in his head. Shrugging it off, he tossed his keys on the hall table and headed purposefully towards the liquor cabinet in the living room. Minutes later he was sitting on the sofa, a newly-opened bottle of scotch in front of him, with a glass in his hand.

He was going to be a father. Zach downed a finger of scotch and quickly refilled his glass. When? How? He ran a hand through his hair in agitation and sighed loudly. Who was he kidding? He knew exactly when…and precisely how. Zach closed his eyes and leaned back against the sofa as the memory of that night coming rushing back.

He’d taken advantage. He should've known better than to allow things to go so far when things were as screwed up as they were. Kendall needed professional help, not a session of lovemaking. Did he honestly think he could fix things with sex? That was her MO, not his. But as guilty as he felt, a voice in his head kept reminding him that he wasn't the one who started things - she was. She had wanted him just as much as he had wanted her.

“I need you, Zach. Make love to me,” she had pleaded. And he had complied, willingly, unable to resist grabbing onto the hope that they were finally going to be okay, that they were going to begin to heal together. And he promised to love her. “Always,” he had said as their bodies joined together, their eyes locked on each other. He was so sure, so sure that they were on their way back. How could he have been so wrong?

And now, for a night that never should’ve happened, there were far-reaching consequences. A baby. A lapse in judgment. What a legacy to give a child. Another innocent child stuck in the middle of a failing marriage. He couldn’t stop the memory of a young brown-haired boy being fought over by a cruel, domineering father and a gentle, loving mother from appearing before his eyes. It wasn’t fair. Zach downed his second glass of scotch, groaning as he felt it burn its way down his throat. An unplanned, unexpected child. Unbidden, his thoughts turned to Ethan.

His mind shifted to the grown son he had recently discovered. After the mistakes and misunderstandings between them, there was just too much anger and hurt on both sides for either to get past for them to become father and son. As a result, their relationship was non-existent - just the way Ethan wanted it. Ignoring the unwelcome pain in his chest, he poured another finger of scotch and watched as the light reflected off of the amber liquid. He had taken every precaution not to feel that pain again, and it had worked. Until Nicholas.

Zach felt the tears burning behind his eyes as he quickly took a drink, his hand shaking as he tried to balance the glass on the arm of the sofa. Not a day went by where he didn’t think of the sweet boy that had captured his heart. Not a day went by when he didn’t remember the time they spent together, just the two of them, as well as a family with Kendall. Bringing the glass back to his lips, he quickly finished his drink and swallowed painfully. And not a day went by that he didn’t remember that he was dead.

Suddenly feeling the need to be closer to Nick, Zach grabbed the open bottle of scotch, along with his glass and headed upstairs.

************

He opened the nursery door and let his eyes scan the room slowly, taking in the familiar surroundings and the faint smell of baby powder. The movers followed instructions well, for Zach couldn’t detect anything out of its rightful place. A brief pang of remorse rose in his chest over the way things were handled before he quelled it, reminding himself what he had been trying to do when he had the room emptied and then refilled. Now, instead of seeing Nicholas here, all he could see was Kendall. Devastated, angry, broken Kendall. He backed out of the room quickly, closing the door behind him. Leaning against it, he closed his eyes and tried to catch his breath. When his heartbeat returned to normal, he shifted the bottle underneath his arm and headed across the hall.

The guest room was just as he’d left it. Evidently Kendall hadn’t seen anything of his that warranted being removed from sight. He felt his stomach clench in fear. Oh God. What if she found…?

The bottle and glass made a clanging sound as he distractedly dropped them on the nightstand, his eyes fixed on the pillow. Closing his eyes, he slipped a hand underneath the pillow, searching. He let out the breath that he had been holding when his hand found what he was looking for, Nicholas’ copy of Goodnight, Moon. Suddenly, feeling comforted, Zach crawled onto the bed and gave into his need for sleep.

Zach exited the elevator with a bounce in his step and headed down the hospital hall, in his hands a small stuffed bear and a bouquet of pink roses. Today was the day he was going to get his wife back. He couldn’t help the smile that spread across his face. He was going to be a dad. He rounded the corner to see Joe Martin closing the door to Kendall’s room.

“Hey, Joe. Is she awake?” His smile faded when he saw Joe frown.

“Zach, can we talk for a minute?” Joe’s voice was quiet in the busy hallway.

“Can’t it wait, Joe? I really want to see my family.”
Family, he thought to himself. After today, Zach Slater was going to have his family back.

Joe shook his head and waited for the nurse with the medicine cart to go by before continuing. “It can’t,” he replied, steering Zach away from Kendall’s door.

Unable to sneak a peek through the window into Kendall’s room, he allowed the older man to direct him to the chairs that lined the wall of the waiting area. “So what’s so important that it couldn’t wait until after I’d seen my wife?” he asked as he laid the bear and the flowers on the empty seat beside him.

“You know that I was concerned with Kendall’s health when she was admitted after the accident.” At Zach’s nod he continued. “It was-”

Joe stood as well and placed a restraining hand on Zach’s arm. “Zach, no! Wait.” He waited until he had Zach’s attention and sighed in resignation. “Physically, Kendall is fine. She’ll make a full recovery.”

Zach sank down into the chair, relieved, for that’s what he'd been told yesterday. “I know. You already told me.” He sat up straighter, suddenly wary when Joe averted his eyes. “What happened?”

“I don’t know quite how to say this, Zach.” Joe removed his glasses, closing his eyes as he pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Just say it, Joe,” he urged as he watched the older man struggling. “I’ve got a pregnant wife I wanna go see.”

Joe opened his eyes and tucked the glasses into his lab coat’s pocket. “I’m so sorry, Zach.” The expression on Joe’s face said it all.

“No,” he whispered hoarsely.
He couldn’t mean…

“Kendall lost the baby. The malnutrition and dehydration, combined with the accident, was just too much for her frail body. She miscarried late last night.”[i/]

Zach woke up gasping for air, his shirt drenched with sweat and stuck to his body. He looked down to see Nicholas’ book grasped tightly in his large hand, his knuckles white, and tried to breathe some air into his constricted lungs. He couldn’t do it again. He couldn’t lose another child. His thoughts turned to Kendall and he could feel the anger building. Right then and there he made up his mind. He knew what he had to
