Hair Color
What are the best brands of "crazy" color to use? What are the best brands for more natural color? What hair colors have you sported?

I've tried Manic Panic and Punky Colors. Jury is still out on which one is better, but Punky Colors doesn't display the outcome color very well.

Never use Rouge Romantiques if you want your hair to stay red. It's worse than wash-outs!

My hair has been: brown, blonde, red, auburn, dark purple, bright purple, pink, and orange.

Re: Hair Color
Special Effects seems to be the colourant of choice for the hairpros up here, Salyx.

And the methodology they suggest to make it work is thusly:

Apply dye to hair.
Wrap hair in plastic wrap.
Blow-dry off and on for 20min.
Remove plastic wrap.
Rinse until clear (or as clear as it's going to get).
Don't wash for a couple of days.

I can't vouch for it, because my job won't let me do crazy colours. Plain ol' black for me.

Re: Hair Color
oooh now I stalk you in the fashion section.

In the past I've generally used Manic Panic and Punky Colours and this other stuff from England which is the same sort of neon ectoplasmic goo,I don't remember the name. I think they all give basically the same result.
I did my hair flame- which faded to traffic pylon orange after 1 wash (looked amazing under blacklight though).
Fuschia, Lilac,Rose, Flamingo, burgundy and a bunch of other reds. Pillerbox was my favorite because it's pink based. Now I normally use Sunset Red henna which is almost natural looking
on my hair.

Reds always fade though. Basically as Grace says don't wash your hair every day. Also don't condition too much.

yeah that's it.
I used to stock up on it when I visited the UK, or I'd get people to send it to me, back in the days when you couldn't get that sort of stuff here.
now that one can buy Manic Panic at the pharmacy...it's kind of lost it's allure.

Re: Hair Color
directions is cool... my hair's a bit dark for them to take very well on me though. the fade after the 1st wash is enough to make it fairly non-noticable on my hair .... (handy for weekend hair though!) they show up much better if you're bleached.

Re: Hair Color
I have naturally dark blond/light reddish brown hair and I found that certain shades of red showed up really well (as opposed to the blue/purples which didn't do much...must be my natural reddish tint)

I did eventually bleach my hair and got neon hair loveliness...
(back in the days when I wasn't looking for work...heh)

You can also get really 'interesting' hair colors if you bleach your hair and then put a more brand name type permanant red hair color...ie clairol
(don't try this unless you want bright salmon pink hair)

I'm considering doing highlights and lowlights ... (not on top of each other, obviously) but I've got a sneeky suspicion it wouldn't look as good I as I picture it looking!

Re: Hair Color
Highlights and lowlights: it's always best to leave this sort of thing to the professionals (if you were actually going to attempt it yourself...assuming you aren't a professional)

The key is: don't go overboard with the amount of H's & L's and think about including a warmer tone.
Otherwise you are in danger of entering the world of frosted hair, acid wash jeans, fringe, Shakira....and Bonnie Tyler.:eek

Doing your highlights in larger, chunkier sections(but not stripes) looks really good.

But keep in mind- it's only hair...It will grow back
...unless you have alopaecia.:(

I just recently saw the video for 'total eclipse of the heart'
for the first time in years. It's quite terrifying actually...in that good 80's terrifying way.

I'm trying to think of a good example of 'chunky' hair highlights
but am now plagued with visions of late eighties hair metal goddesses: Lita Ford, Heart, Poison (oh those are men aren't they?)

Re: Hair Color

There is a main stream company that does wild permanent hair dye colors. X-Treme FX, they are actually maybelline or something but that is there oh look I'm cool name. You can buy it at Target, Walmart and K-Mart.

The colors are a bright red, orange, purple, blue and they have a bleaching kit. It also explains how to do highlights with their stuff. I am not that talented though. I used the Red color over my natural brown to get an auburn color. I WANT to go either purple or blue... but my job is semi - professional. Its also not that expensive 10-11 us dollars. It lasts a few months and then I usually have to dye it again.

You should try it.

Re: the days
have to be careful with going pink, it either looks damn cool, or really damn not. Of course it also depends on if you want to go fully pink or just streaks/highlights or something like that.

Platinum blonde with purple streaks also looks cool if you have enough hair, but you kinda have to have plenty of hair to pull it back into a ponytail or braid... Otherwise it can end up making you look like a lamp shade.

pink!
Well, my hair is in a Chelsea cut and I want to bleach it and have the whole thing hot pink.

Six says that with my big eyes, I would look like an anime character. Sounds fine to me.

Re: pink!
I always use Special FX... my it's been a long time since I dyed my hair. But I have really dark brown hair so I usually dye it a normal red first and then use the Special FX after a couple of days to a week. I like to use Clairol's Herbal Essences. That Xtreme FX stuff is from Clairol too.
My friend tried to go from blonde to blue... bad idea it was green after a day.

Salyx, you would look like an anime character... Go for it! And I wanna see the results!
