BDSM
The title says it all... BDSM...

Very clearly, eroticism and pornography are relative things. Sometimes you're aroused or tickled by something, sometimes by another thing quite different. Sometimes you love reading again some comix, sometimes the same comix leaves you indifferent. Sometimes you MAY (rarely) be aroused by a porn comix, most of the time you won't. Same thing for a (standard) movie or book, obviously.

Etc... My point: I'm NEVER EVER aroused by BDSM stuff. Never. Take for example "Elisabeth Bathory" by Raulo. After two pages I quit before puking. I just wonder how some people can write (draw) such things and how some people can enjoy such things.

(Yes. I know. Sade. I have no answer. Here I don't puke)

So... Are you aroused by BDSM? And if so, why?

Re: BDSM
No, I'm not. My initial reaction to Raulo's "Elizabeth Bathory" was the same as yours. Some time later I steeled myself to read the series and found that there was some macabre humour in it and the quality of the artwork was high, although what it sometimes depicted was horrid! A turn on? Nope. The same goes for some of Pichard's more extreme work such as "Madeliene" and "Road To Repentance", and yet I admire his art. Crepax and Dubigeon have both had a go at Pauline Reage's "History Of O" with effects that were both stunning and repellent at the same time. The works of people like Preston are far too much for my stomach, along with the rest of their ilk. Tarsis is interesting I guess.

But what ever I think or however I react doesn't alter the reality that power and status are part of the reality of sexual relationships and playing with fantasies about that reality is understandable.

I suppose that I tend to categorize BDSM material into the stuff I don't much like but respect and the stuff I don't. I really hate BDSM stories where the bad guys win in the end, that always seems wrong to me. On the other hand, I've seen a fair amount of BDSM anime where the bullies and the brutes finally get their cummuppance and I admit to relishing them getting their just deserts.

But a turn on.......?? Not for me buddy.

They say it's as big as four cats, and it's got a retractable leg so as it can leap up at you better and you know what Ted, it lights up at night, and it's got four ears. Two of them are for listening and the other two are kind of back-up ears, and it's claws are as big as cups and for some reason it's got a tremendous fear of stamps and Mrs. Doyle was tellin' me that it's got magnets on it's tail so's if you're made out of metal it can attach itself to you, and instead of a mouth it's got four arses.
And some of his ears are on the inside of his head and when he yawns it sounds like Liam Neeson chasing a load of hens around inside a barrel.

BDSM doesn't do an awful lot for me either, it has to be said. I'll admit to reading a couple of things out of curiosity, but what I've seen soon became a little too much quite quickly.
I think it's safe to say I am not that much of a fan.

Re: BDSM
I'm not a fan of extreme BDSM comics and I try to stay as far as possible from any kind of BDSM 'traditional' porn.

Still, I really like some BDSM authors. I even find some of them arousing. The first names that come to mind are Jacobsen and Morgan. And a good 30% of manga authors.

Re: BDSM
Ah.

Good point djinn.

I didn't think of Jacobsen or Morgan when I wrote my post. Which makes we think that we could add Ardem, for example.

Net result: this thread is probably 90% irrelevant.

FIRST DEFINE BDSM....

Re: BDSM
Noyb, while I was thinking of examples (like Jacobsen and Morgan) I certainly considered Manning. After a while I decided not to include him as, for how much I like its work and consider him one of the greatest artists alive today, I don't find it necessarily arousing.

Another classic is von Gotha, but his BDSM style is definitly softer…

Re: BDSM
Very good example NOYB. I admire Manning's work enormously, both for his brilliant artistry and for his eccentric narrative style. But I don't find his fetishism or his BDSM work arousing .... just brilliant. However, the fact that the characters DO find their behaviour arousing provides a kind of third person - removed frisson I guess.

Re: BDSM
I don't look at comics much, but I do look at some of the stuff Muffing collects (or looks at and discards), and I have to say that the harder and more intense the BDSM stuff gets, the more claustrophobic I feel while looking at it. It gives me a bad physical reaction and I don't like it at all. I prefer the funny stuff, like Bondage Fairies or some of the lighter Housewives stuff.

Re: BDSM
Turns me off.. the sight of chain or choker or whips will make me delete the thing.. that's also the reason I've never read Manning's work.

But it's another thing for Bondage Fairies.. I can't remember why I even considered reading the book but with cute characters and some funny stuff thrown in makes me like reading it.. and that's the only exception.. then again.. maybe not.. Wicked Wanda is another VERY light BDSM stuff that I like..

Re: BDSM
I hate almost all of it. When I'm confronted with it, I think dark thoughts about human nature. That being said I have to admit being amused by looking at Dementia drawings. There's a certain twisted totally-over-the-top sense of humour about it that I find appealing.

I also like Jacobsen, but more for his satirical take on life than his depictions of BDSM.

Re: BDSM
I definitely agree with Muffing (no surprise).

Jacobsen doesn't take SM seriously. He's just awfully pessimistic.

Manning... More ambiguous... But his drawings are superb AND he's clever AND interesting AND provokating AND I don't feel like puking AND... :D

Re: BDSM
DDSM, is ... quite complicated to explain, i love all forms of it, i really probably dont know why, but when i think about it, is maybe because at some point in life, you stop identifying with the good guy, and you start identifying with the bad guy,(extremely simplified). And the espousal of something visual that gratifies the identification , is for me pretty cool, coz the other scenarios make me puke, the bdsm scenarios seem, more organic, its usually forced so, theres no question about consent, esp to most of the stuff that i would actually like to see in comic porn.. maybe someone out there understands . :)

P.s: on a lighter note BDSM is AWESOME

Re: BDSM
Ok, I am new here so I may be jumping into something I don't know about but it wouldn't be the first time.

When I first read this post I was shocked. I came here looking for the vary things that where being listed as not liked. Then I came back and re-read the posts and I found a curious thing happening. What most people where not liking where comics that I would not describe as being BDSM.

I have been a member of the BDSM community for close to 10 years now and one of the things that got me involved was the works of artists like Manning, Tarsis, Duvet, and Mancini all spoke to a part of me that was missing something.

What was being described to me where horror comics not erotic comics. Works like "Elisabeth Bathory" by Raulo tend, in my opinion, to be more about the horror of the world then about any BDSM themes of power exchange. Yes there is dominance there but it is non consensual. If you contrast this with Jacobsen's works you see what I am talking about. He is writing about non-consensual situations but in the end there always seems to be either enough willingness on the part of the victim to make you think about what is going on in the story.

I am not saying that the posters can't have an opinion about what they like and dislike. But I did want to add was that what one person labels and x can be y to another.

Come play in my world.

Enjoy,

rogue
