Anybody else worried about the new movie?
I've heard that the unicorn is supposed to be computer animated. While I understand that this is the most practical way for her to appear, I'm still a little worried about it. I know they would have trouble finding a real unicorn , or in getting a horse to act like one, but still... I guess it's just that Scooby Doo was computer animated in his recent movie and that turned out, well....
I am a bit worried too. I dont' realy like the Scoobie Doo they did or what I have seen of Garfield. I hope they don't do something similar to that.
There is a lot they can do with computers today so you never know. They may make a good unicorn *hopes*

Re: Anybody else worried about the new movie?
I thought the website said they would be using a real horse, but would use CG to make it appear as a unicorn. I could be wrong though, because I haven't been to the official site in a long time.
Re: Anybody else worried about the new movie?
they should meld the two (live horse/CGI) because that worked really well in LOTR for Gollum...how they used andy's movements to make CGI Gollum look life-like. i'm sure horse training is super hard.
i'm going to try not to compare it to the aminated one too much. i love that one dearly and the new movie sure has a lot to live up to.
Re: Anybody else worried about the new movie?
I think the melding of live and CGI would work realy well. I hope they do decide to do it that way.

Re: Anybody else worried about the new movie?
I agree, they should do the mixing of live and CGI.. the problem with live, though, is that I don't think of the unicorn as another horse with a horn. I think of her as something between an Arab horse and a deer. Very lightly built, graceful, wild...
And horses just don't convey the same majesty as a unicorn does.

Re: Anybody else worried about the new movie?
Exactly DelaineV!
The book emphasized how different she was from an ordinary mare. Her mane ran halfway down her back. Her neck was longer and more graceful than a horse's, and her tail is supposed to be different, too. I think it's important that the unicorn NOT look like a horse. Maybe they will try to change her a little, besides adding the horn.
Also, can a horse really act? Sure, you can train a horse, but it will never exactly act. The horse won't have the same expressions and emotions conveyed by the animated unicorn.
Doesn't matter. I'm seeing the move anyway, and I'm really excited about it!
Re: Anybody else worried about the new movie?
They selected a series of white (grey...only albinos are white) Arabians to fill in for the part of the unicorn. They are going to use CGI to make the horse look like the unicorn, and I believe I read somewhere that they will use CGI for more dangerous stunts or something.
If they do the CGI work correctly there will be nothing to worry about. Put it in this perspective...the horse that jumped off the boat in The Ring...that horse was real up until the last moment. I was told the horse plunging over the side was completely CGI. The horse in Sleepy Hollow was supposely CGI in a lot of parts as well. (Someone said the whole movie, I don't think I believe that.)
It's amazing what they can do with visual effects now. I'm desperately hoping that they don't try to make the unicorn more 'cartoony' in rememberance of the 1982 film. As much as I love that movie, I think I will love live action just as much, but it has to really look live action or I won't be terribly happy.
Sorry...film major on a rant.

Thanks Silkysun,
You've put my mind at ease. So, if they decide to do a good job and make her look real they can. I'm sure they will. Hopefully, they won't scooby doo the whole thing.
This brings another questions to mind...What about the Harpy then? She must have to be all computer animated. I can't think of anything real that resembles her very closely...maybe a vulture.

"Dude, remember the fiery beast-demon in LOTR??? That is SO going to be me!!! I am going to ROCK!!!! Woohoo!!! I'll bet at least that part is going to be awesome. As for the unicorn... well, I can only hope for the best. I am actually mostly curious how they will get any expression to read on her face."

Re: .
I think I remember seeing on the site that the harpy and red bull were both going to be completely CG. They were making clay models of them, though, and they looked awesome. Very scary. I think the movie will have more of a darker atmosphere than the animation.
Re: .
That's okay, because the book was a lot darker than the animation.
Schmendrick drank a lot. Prince Lir was near suicidal at the end of the book. The Lady Almathea tore open her own skin with her fingernails when she was first turned from a unicorn.
Darker is okay. I think they curbed the animation because they knew, as a cartoon, people would automatically assume it's a children's movie.
Re: .
Tho even as a children's movie, they still had nudity-- pre-pubescent Amalthea body, and the Harpy. I never noticed until I watched the movie again a few years ago. ;X

Movie Info: Including video of horse cast as the unicorn
Aw yeah! Check out the clay models and concept drawings of the creatures. These are all on the website. I've been all through the movie website. There's a lot of good info about the movie there.
The location they chose for King Hagard's castle is AWESOME. You should all go take a look at the photos.
Here is the link to a video clip of one of the horses cast for the role of the unicorn. You can very clearly see that it is an Arabian: www.the-last-unicorn.net/horses.htm
Finally, the movie is being shot in Hungary, Wales, Ireland, Morocco, and South Africa. Pretty impressive.
Ooooo...they have pics up of the Wales location. Apparently that's where they're going to shoot the forest scenes. WOW! That's all I can say. It is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!
Okay, I've gone on long enough. I hope this is helpful info and not annoying.

::The Red Bull thinks; is THAT the kind of music they are going to use??? Wow... I'm just so... weirded out. I'm so used to the original music... I wasn't expecting that, but I guess I should have expected something more modernish like that. Wow, just, wow. If that's the kind of music they will use, this is going to be a freaky-scary possibly-make-me-cry-for-the-rest-of-my-life movie. It's got Harry Potter and LOTR smeared all over it (in a good way!). It's so different, but it's so good... I'll never get over it. Kinda like this one song by Bjork. (Just the one, mind you!) By the by, isn't it convenient that people can occasionally read my thoughts? ::

They were orginally gonna make the unicorn computer animated but they changed their minds and now she's gonna be a real horse (with fake hair and a fake horn). The horses they're using are beautiful!
