hi people, its my first post here, i've been loggin this forum for some time but i never really register .
i've noticed that guys really know music so i would love to hear your opinions about the music that i am making.
its not really classical though, but it has definetely a classic infuence but its darker oh yes it is , almost like a movie score but sometimes with actual drums , its simple music, its all about feeling and i don't follow any rules or anything i just do what sounds good to me eheh, so don't flame me for that
so check out the link zebox.com/thehateworkproject/
(the project is called machina, not hatework thats to violent eheh)
Hello, I listened to your pieces and hope my comments can help.
First you mention there are classical influences and by that I assume you mean minimalism because the piece is very much that.
In "buried dreams end" I think you have some promise in the music box/bells motive. It seems you want the piece (and this goes for all three) to start soft and gradually crescendo. This piece crescendos until it stops short and the piano sound takes over. Perhaps this crescendo could be capitlized further though...
Add some woodwinds! Have them play figures similar to the music box motive you have playing under the strings and build harmonic texture. Speaking of harmony, I think you should either colormore or darken the chords to give the piece the power you are looking for.
"religion" was my favorite of the three. Your ear really opens to the tubular bells in the beginning.Perhaps this would make a better third movement. Unless you want to book end the difference in "orchestration" by the two other pieces which contrast it. The tubular bells however become greating as they repeat constant throughout. The fact that an additional pitch is added in the last moments of the piece is a refreshing suprize however.
"the dawn of man" is very "Zarathrustra" in quality, but again I think the chords could be colored more and the ostinato changed. This could be changed simply by omitting a note or changing measure.
Try listening to some minimalists if you havent "Reich, Andriessen, Adams, Glass" or even the music of Danny Elfman for the dark quality you are looking, but perhaps his music may be a little two quarky (Im sure you know some of these composers) Also, as the pieces could lend themselves to popular music, check out Glenn Danzigs "Black Aria" I think you would like it (if you havent heard it yet.)
Anyway. Thank you for sharing you pieces. Enjoy writing.

tkx for the feedback.
ooh you're getting too technical there for me.
like i said i don't know much about orhestration or music theory, i only know the basics(chords, scales, i'm more of a guitar player) , i just write what sounds good to me. i wish i could do the things you mention(do you have msn messeger maybe you could help me )
i really don't want to write a classical piece though, cuz i really can't lol and what i'm trying to achieve is more of an ambient album with some classical influences(yeh minimalism,of course not mozart or anything like that).
btw i do know some of glass, and a lot of danny elfman, cool stuff.
anyway tkx for the feedback. Edited by: The Emperor at: 3/22/04 1:13 pm
no need for mozart
There is no need for mozart style writing in these pieces. ambience is fine and the concept you have has been done many times. (thats not to take away from your own idea of course.)
if you want to email me, feel free. I usually dont spend too much time PMing but I check my email often.

It would be fun to discuss music, and id be willing to listen to your ideas.
recomendations?
actually i'm taking some time now off the writing process, but once i get back to it i will probably send you mail
btw could you give me some recomendations of the best works of the composers you mentioned?
anything with a moody or dark ambience is welcome i really dig that kind of stuff but actually don't have many stuff in that style. i need more
These aren't bad at all, especially for someone who admits to not having much musical training or theory knowledge. You just need to open up your mind and expand your ideas, too much of the songs are a bit repetitive and drone on after a while. Perhaps you're composing from a minimalist standpoint, or this might have been unintentional.
Nevertheless, try to explore different melodies and have them interact with each other. Have ideas that resolve at the end instead of just leaving the listener hanging. Try to make use of all of the various instruments available to you.
tkx
oh tkx for listening!
yeh the repetitive aspect is intentional, definetely minimalistic. most of the stuff that influenced to write this kind of music are way more repetitive that what i'm doing, i'm actually trying not to be so repetive as them
anyway for classical fans i think its normal to find it repetitive cuz its such a rich style but like i said, i'm not trying to write anything near classical, actually some songs i have done have drums and electronic elements.
my goal is just write a good ambient/chill out album(this tend to be repetitive as hell ) and i happen to use orchestral sounds cuz i love them
