need to learn music theory
im kinda in a interesting position. my school doesnt have music theory and i would like to learn it, sooner rather than later. i know a lot of colleges want to have to take music theory in high school but i cant. is there any other way to learn music thoery? or how would i be able to persue a career as a composer?

need to learn theory
If you live in a city that has an orchestra of any size at all, you may wish to approach the conductor of the orchestra or associate conductor and ask for their assistance in finding some one for you. You may get lucky and have one of the conductors provide you with some instruction. When you make your inquiry, be sure that you make clear that your objective is to become a composer. In some cases that gives you and edge and you may find that the conductor is more willing to do the teaching. If so, you've hit a home run because the conductor can provide the theoretical background and the practical application, helping you make your theory lessons "playable." good luck!

Re: need to learn theory
When I was in high school, my school did not offer any theory either. My director knew I was interested in learning theory, and he helped me as much as he could. He gave me books to read, set up a computer program with a keyboard to work on ear training, and answered any questions I had. I didn't learn EVERYTHING, and I didn't learn as much as I would have learned in a class, but I learned quite a bit. Have you asked any music teachers at your school for help? Good luck!

thanks
Do you really think the conductor at the local orchestra would be willing to help out. I live in an area where i feel i would be lucky to even talk to a conductor. As to getting my director to help I've already asked and at teh moment I don't think I will get much help. Thanks for the replies

Re: thanks
Do you play any instruments? Do you take private lessons? If you can take private lessons, perhaps a private teacher could help out. If your music teacher isn't willing to help, could you ask them to point you in a direction where you can get help? Are there any other schools in your area where maybe you could possibly talk to another music teacher for help or a suggestion if your teacher isn't willing to help? Those are just a few ideas! I hope it works out for you!

Re: need to learn music theory
It would be difficult, if not impossible to develop a career as a composer without a deep, working knowledge of theory. Theory is dear to my heart. My undergrad degree from Eastman is Theory and Composition, and I spent many years teaching theory to Freshmen and Sophomores in more than one college. Depending on the size of your city, you may be able to study with as orchestra member, maestro, or assistant. You might even check with a music school, if you have a good one in the area, to find out if independent study is available. Good luck and watch those parallel fourths and fifths.
