"Reefer Madness"
I don't know how many of you guys across the Atlantic have ever heard of this propaganda film or the musical it inspired but I thought I'd post something about it if anyone is interested. In 1936, a propaganda film first called "Tell Your Children" then changed to the more sensational title "Reefer Madness" was produced to warn parents and teens about the dangers of marijuana. It was so ridiculously over the top, it resurfaced in the 80's as a cult favorite at midnight showings in theatres around the country. Two writers, Dan Studney and Kevin McNulty, decided the melodramatic nature of the film would make a great basis for a musical which went on to become a hit (no pun intended) in LA. Showtime recently aired a film version of it that is great! If you have some way to download their programming or get a version of the network over in Europe, I highly recommend checking it out. If you like "Little Shop of Horrors" and "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", you'll like this. I have it on tape and can make copies but I know VCR's in Europe take a different type of tape than one's in the US but if anyone has a way of playing US tapes or can convert them to the European format, I'd be glad to make you a copy. The sound quality isn't great because the audio tracking on my VCR is off but it doesn't ruin the enjoyment of the film. Just let me know and I'll get a copy to you!

The new version is, at least. Haven't seen the old one yet.

I only heard about it because Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars) was in it, but the entire thing is just so magnificently over the top and extravagant.
