"razor"
buddy's soul
has a hole
so big

his soul was
as resistent
as much control
as yours

and now the sweet tenor voice keeps
screamin' ... "stop ....
i cannot sing no more about it"

as
the beat continues cuttime imprecision

and the sound unravels
slow fade singin' wild scissoring songs

sharp
and
inconsolable

-- reading about Buddy Bolden, barber by day, early jazz innovator by night, who went nuts at age 31 during a New Orleans parade, wandered off blowing insanity. Spent the rest of his life in a sanatorium.

Re: "razor"
I've found that if i start editing my pieces i never stop, so once i end that first time i sit with them, that's it - i consider that my 'final draft' and don't let myself mess around with them any more. (Well, i say that, but it's not entirely true, because you know there's always one or two little misspellings or something that you'll find somewhere down the line, but for the most part i try not to let myself 'edit' them). Which word was it you kept changing, if you don't mind saying, since i didn't get to see your various edits?

Have you seen the PBS/Ken Burns series Jazz? It's an excellent series if you ever get the chance to view it. I only saw bits and pieces when it aired on PBS so we borrowed the set in sections from the local library and watched it over a period of several weeks (it's something like 12 VHS taps long, and each tape is about 2 hrs). Such a good series though, well worth the time.

Thanks for sharing this. :butterfly

Re: "razor"
Thanks for reading Karen :sun

lol! ...the line i kept changing was

his soul was
as resistent
as much control
as yours

First, made it:

his soul was
as resistent
as much in control
as yours

Then:

his soul was
as resistent
as in control
as yours

Then back. Silly right? But it wouldn't sound right .... :grumble

As far as the series Jazz goes, i haven't seen any of it. But i remember back then i was hanging around with this very VERY classical musician, then all of a sudden he was just turned on by jazz, totally into all things jazz. And it was because he was watching that series. So i know it must be good.

Can't believe it's been almost a month since i was here...

So sad what happened to New Orleans, and with that Jazz series fresh in my memory i can't help but wonder if that hurricane has forever taken away the history and atmosphere that was so uniquely jazzy about that city. I hope not.

Hope all's well with you & yours, M.

Hurricanes, tsunamis ... it's been a bad year weatherwise, huh? ... amazing to think how easily nature can wipe out the relics of our achievements and cultures ....

Re: "razor"
Karen, found out there's a novel called Coming Through Slaughter, based on Bolden's life, written (coincidentally!) by the "Indo-Canadian halfbreed" author Michael Ondatjee, about 30 years ago. I just read it and liked it. A little 70's and experimental, but pretty good, good writing. 8)

Re: "razor"
Thanks, M -- i know my "other half" may be interested in this so i'll be sure to let him know and we'll definitely check to see if the local library system has a copy.

Hope all's well with you!
